About the Author

Fredrick M. Cady is Emeritus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Montana State University. His research activities include biomedical engineering, visual signal processing, astronomical image processing, and electro-optics and electro-optical system engineering. He has been honored with several teaching awards, including MSU Bozeman Mortar Board Professor of the Month, MSU Alumni-Chamber of Commerce Award for Excellence and the Phi Kappa Phi Anna Krueger Fridley Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Excellent book

I've used this text for the past three years in my undergraduate Microprocessors course (lecture plus lab) and I highly recommend it. As a previous reviewer noted, there are a few mistakes, but these are quite minor and in no way detract from the usability of this text. The chapters are organized well, flow nicely from topic to topic, and keep the reader's attention without being wordy or repetitive. There are lots of examples and many of them include both an assembly and a C solution for the reader. This text is especially good if you're using CodeWarrior and any of the HC12-based boards from Axiom, but would work well with other HC12 boards or student learning kits.

Because the book is really Good, the level for me is the best!!, Please tell me if you have more books for the freescale microcontrolers that contains CAN communication and Automotive applications.

Good practical but a few mistakes

I am an engineering major at Florida State this text book gives good information about how the microcontroller works, how fast it is, where the memory is at, basically the memorization and put on a piece of paper and pass a test class; however, as for practical the examples it gives I find are not very good, The book has examples that are incomplete and in lab it is hard to follow along.

Update, after review other books about this I actually have to give it another star, yes there are some mistakes but it is a 2nd edition and of course there will be mistakes because we are only human. It take a little bit of reading and actual reading not skimming through it like a novel to find out who killed who because it will be used later on so you may want to actually pay attention. I actually enjoyed the last class that I had even though I only made a C. I am about to hopefully take another class using this book so hopefully I will remake another update after this one.

Not for emotional wimps

Simply put, this is not the kind of novel one takes lightly. It is a thought provoking, dark, and meaty book that causes the reader to feel and live the desperation of the characters portrayed. The book was written after WWll, and the aftermath of one man's self-medication of a war injury with the morphine (heroin) drug. Looped into the mix is a very complicated marriage based on guilt, her lost hopes and dreams, those that worship the weak, and the weak that worship no one. It is a novel, I think better read several times, for the first time is as if you are numbed by the bleakness of it all, the heaviness and the heartbreak.
This is no novel for emotional wimps.

Beautiful, dark, and unnerving.

The dimensional misery in which the novel's characters find themselves is poetically narrated. Since the novel was published in the late 40's, it belongs to an era where readers were patient enough to relish lengthy but poignant description. It's an alluring read that can prove rewarding to all those who ponder its painful subtleties. The characters' hopelessness may seem unbearable at times, but ironically, it is rendered in such beautiful prose that it easily illicits compassion and understanding from the reader. This alone makes it quite addictive. Frankie Machine and his cohorts (who never seem like cartoonish dregs, but actual people), embody what many would rather ignore: the reality of those who meet with constant disillusionment. The reader doesn't have to be from the "underbelly" of America to empathize with the book's main figures. In fact, Algren, through his melodic sentences of haunting sincerity, might even corrode the comfort of those who believe too strongly in the American Dream. Darkness and destitution have never exuded such truth and humanity.

Worth reading

I heard the title The Man with the Golden Arm long before I ever read the book or saw the movie. It's a beautiful, evocative title, but it also makes you think of something grotesque: a man with a shiny prosthetic. When I got older, and knew the story centered on a junkie, the connotation became even more disturbing: an arm jaundiced by the hypo. I was never much into addiction stories and Algren's book (purchased as a shiny new softcover back in the early 80s, when I was spending the greater part of my college loan money on the creation of a private library) sat on my shelf for more than 20 years.

It turns out that the book is quite a good read. Algren locates the source of dealer Frankie Machine's addiction in his WW2 service-he was wounded and got hooked on the morphine that eased the pain of his injury. The novel also makes clear, though, that in spite of his friends' admiration and awe of his Purple Heart, Frankie was no hero. A grunt's grunt, he remained three years a private.

While the novel tells the story of Frankie's several attempts to kick the stuff, what we get out of it is the tale of a loser in a community of losers, people the American dream has left behind: small-time swindlers, dwellers in fleabag tenements, drunks, and sweet girls who can't get a break Among the sad detritus of this universe, located around Chicago's West Division Street, Frankie Machine shines like a star, with his big talk and his talent (the "golden arm" refers to his sure skill dealing cards, which he hopes to transfer to playing the drums in a big band).

Still, his life spirals downward. And although the drugs are central, you can't help feeling that if it weren't morphine that did Frankie in, it would have been something else. At bottom, he doesn't believe he's worth saving; one of the achievements of the novel is that you end up feeling they're all worth saving, not just Frankie, but also his grimier fellows. Algren draws his characters with such vividness that he takes you beyond pity and amusement to pure empathy with their humanity.

Clear explanations, albeit grammatical emphasis (4.5 stars)

This seems like a very clear, very undergraduate text. It includes 27 "tools" for discourse analysis, and doesn't assume any prior background in linguistics. It may therefore be useful for students doing research in anthropology, sociology, or any other field in which qualitative analysis is important. Some of the "tools," such as the "cohesion" tool (#20) and the "topic flow" tool (#22), will also be in the kit of any professional writer. Most of the tools focus on grammatical features of the discourse, rather than word choice or other semantic aspects, but more or less build up to higher and higher levels of generality as the book progresses. I read the book to get ideas for a management course I'm teaching, and personally found the tools in the ##20s to be the most interesting from the standpoint of teaching critical thinking.

However, the conclusion threw me a bit: whereas most of the book treats "discourse analysis" as an activity, at the end the author (JPG) starts talking about "a discourse analysis" as the result of applying all 27 tools. In light of this reification, some things are missing from the book: for one, an example of the product of a 27-step analysis; for another, and more importantly, a deeper discussion of the motivations for creating such an analysis. While JPG talks about how you can know whether "a" discourse analysis is "valid" -- namely, when the results of the 27 tools "converge" (@185-186) -- surely this also depends on its intended use. E.g., if your goal is to study the contexts in which different social classes divide speech into stanzas, "convergence" might not mean the same thing as when your purpose is to study the ways in which different social classes use economic explanations to describe the world around them. Also missing from the book are any significant discussions of metaphor and of "framing," e.g. as the latter is used by TV talking heads in regard to political discourse. (My guess is that framing relates to what JPG refers to as "figured worlds," but it would have been nice if this were made clear.) Since I'm not in the target audience for the book, I subtract just half a point from what otherwise seems like a solid and user-friendly textbook.

This is a superb practical guide for doing discourse analysis in English. It would have been nice to have included more languages, especially non-European languages, but this slim volume does a wonderful job of covering the major areas of interest in English-language discourse, and has a strong emphasis on grammar.

Essential for new researchers

Just as the title says. If you are new to discourse analysis, this is a go to book for Gee's approach from a methodological standpoint. His other text is equally important for the theoretical underpinnings necessary to defend your work and to fully understand the method but this is the nuts and bolts guide often absenct from research texts. I wish more analytical methods had texts as clear as this one.

Gee has become extremely popular and wide spread over the years, but bear in mind that there are several other forms of discourse analysis - each with its own theoretical underpinnings. If you want to first read a book that has a overview of some of the main schools of discourse analysis, check out Rebecca Rogers' Critical Discourse Analysis in Education first. I found her book equally invaluable.

Best strength building programme for women. Hands down!!!

I bought this book a couple of years ago, and thought the exercises looked too easy to start with, so put it away. I mean, how hard is a body weight bridge?
A year later I completed the Lift Like a Goddess programme and looked for something new. I dragged out this book and decided to give level 1 a go. Yes, the amount of exercises were shorter than I was used to, and I didn't come home from the gym feeling smashed. I left each time feeling I could give more.

However, don't be fooled by the shorter workouts! I found I could not do more than 6 bodyweight bridges without getting a cramp. To attempt even 1 holding a weight on my stomach was sheer impossibility. So I gladly stayed at level 1 and worked through it consistently. The day after each workout, was I ever sore.

Within 3 weeks I found myself getting stronger. Then, so surprisingly, I managed a proper squat. I have severe scoliosis and a damaged Achilles' tendon due to surgery on my leg for the scoliosis and I have never been able to squat without falling over. Lunging - fine. Squatting, No. However, building the glutes muscles meant I was now stable enough to squat. And my knees no longer caved in. Now I can squat with a 35 kg barbell no problem at all. Next, I found that after 2 years of attempting chin ups, I finally managed one and now can do 12, with a brief break between every 2 or 3. I think the back strengthening work in this programme finally made it all come together for me, even though arm work is not big. The programme I was on was arm heavy (as most programmes are) but, as Brett has realised, most girls struggle with their butts, and arms will naturally improve as you use those bigger muscles more. It makes sense, but I was a bit worried stopping all that arm work. Until I finally managed chin ups which are out of reach of most girls, even those doing arm work daily.

I have now done 3 of the programmes in this book, and in a few weeks, will finally begin the advanced programme. It said not to try it till you could glute lift about 60 kg. That's a joke, I thought at the time as I couldn't glute lift my own bodyweight more than 6 times. Well, I've passed the 60 kg goal weeks ago and now glute lift 75 kg. My jeans are smaller, my butt is no longer saggy, I have abundant energy, I spend less than 2 hrs in the gym a week, my legs are tight all over, I've changed shape all over and, wait for it - I'm 49 years old!!!

good for people with little to no experience with weight training

This is a great book for someone who has little to no experience with using weights. I've been using this book for 12 weeks, and I've seen great results in terms of body shape and strength gains. A few things to be aware of:
- Unless you already have a home gym, you'll get the most out of this book if you have access to a gym
- Be prepared to spend a lot of time flipping through the book between sets -- the layout of the book isn't very efficient, so the list of exercises are in a different part of the book than the description / instructions of how to do the exercises. This problem is even worse in the kindle version, so GET THE PRINT VERSION.
- People will stop you in the gym and ask you what you're reading. A lot of women will recognize the book. Your friends may notice the changes to your butt and go out and buy the book for themselves (4 friends and counting)

Fantastic Women's routine, even for home gym

This book is just what I needed to get started with free weights at home without a trainer. For anyone not aware, the basic premise is that men and women have different bodies and thus require different strength training routines to get the best and fastest results. Men focus more on building arms and chest, but since most women aren't looking to build their pecs and get a huge, ripped back, Strong Curves focuses more on building the legs and glutes while developing tone and strength in the upper body as well. The idea is that women tend to have the most potential for strength in their lower bodies, so we are strongest when we train those muscle groups hard and often. There is no leg day vs. arm day vs. chest day here, butt and legs are a big part of every routine and will be mixed in no matter which other muscle groups you are working on that day.

The exercise plans are concise and well put together and I find the photos and descriptions of each exercise are descriptive enough for me to understand what I'm supposed to do. I did supplement with some Youtube videos for form, though. I am new to free weights but not a complete novice to strength training in general, so I found the first week of exercises to be below my abilities. Since the book has modified versions of several exercises that let you turn the intensity down or up depending on what you can handle, this wasn't a problem because I could just do the tougher version and still get a good workout in. That said, I think this is a great routine for beginning or more advanced lifters.

One complaint I have is that the instructions for each exercise are way in the back of the book so you have to thumb around a bunch when following the routine, at least until you get things memorized. I found it easiest to keep a separate workout journal (there is one in the book) so I didn't have to go back and forth in the book as much. As others have said this will work best for people who are working out in a gym. I workout at home and I have had to swap out some moves for others when I don't have the equipment required. If you want to get the most out of this at home I recommend getting a home gym system (I have the Weber Total Body system which was reasonably priced here on Amazon) because a lot of the upper body workouts in this book require a cable/suspension system. At minimum I would recommend a bench, barbell set, dumbbell set, resistance bands (one with handles and a set of loops), and possibly a squat rack to get you started at home. It's only been a few weeks for me but I am already feeling stronger and having a great time. I can't wait to see where this routine takes me.

Great for a young teenager - boys or girls!!

I received this book years ago when I was around 13-14 from my Grandfather. Although I wasn't an avid reader (at the time), I remember enjoying this book immensely. I picked up a copy for my 13-year-old stepson for general reading over the Summer. Like me, he enjoyed it a great deal as well.

The story is set in the early 60s-70s, and is about a boy named Tony Miglione as he is coming "into his own" in the process of evolving into a young man. After moving from his home in New Jersey, thanks to his father's business success, they move into an upper-class neighborhood in Rosemont, New York. Soon, he meets Joel (a well-to-do local hoodlum) and his older sister, Lisa. Almost instantly, Tony becomes infatuated with Lisa; often attempting to spy on her as she undresses in the window next door. This infatuation with Lisa leads Tony to begin to discover aspects of his own sexual development and desires. Tony also meets a girl named "Corky" who begins to like him very much, but Tony is only interested in the prospect of developing a relationship with Lisa. Joel creates family issues for Tony due to some mischievous behaviors, and eventually their friendship draws to an end. Once Tony realizes that Lisa has a new boyfriend, the youthful struggle of his prospects of love become shattered, leaving Tony to deal with his romantic wounds.

There are some suggestions of sexuality through the book, but not in an inappropriate way. I believe it is a great book for boys (and girls) who are coming into the age of puberty, the prospects of attraction, as well as interpersonal relationships. It also makes a good segue for discussion of your child's physical and emotional changes that occur at the beginning of maturity.

Sweet and Unremarkable

My wife is a novelist and she recommended THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T. She said was a really good YA romance novel. As I was reading the book, the title of my wife’s latest blog, “Where’s the Romance?” came to mind.

So while I was looking for period romance, or romance period, I eventually realized THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T is actually a coming of age story.

I know, I know; I could have taken the time to read the blurb and I didn’t. Shoot me, God knows my wife will.

So in fairness to Judy Blume, THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T is a pretty good novel about a pubescent boy growing up in New York in the seventies.

I was impressed with how well the author, an adult woman, so convincingly got into the mind of a young teenage boy.

This novel is a bit on the slow side by today’s standards, but considering it was authored decades ago, I wouldn’t be so quick to judge on that account
.
While it makes for an endearing read, I didn’t really feel there was much of a point to the novel. I don’t even recall the ending—it was that forgettable.

THEN AGAIN, MAYBE I WON’T reads like an uninspired memoir. When I finished the book I was thinking: nice, but so what?

A Classic Tale for Multiple Generations

Like many reviewers, I read this book as a 10 year-old. It was the "male" companion to Judy Blume's
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.. I remember the impact it had on me as an adolescent (and the discussion I had with my father after I read it - talk about embarrassing!).

I purchased it for my son. I don't think he's read it yet but I reread it before giving it to him - just to make sure I remembered what was in it so I could field questions if they came up.

It was a great book then and it's still a great book.

It is a very easy going way of letting young people (girls too) understand some of puberty's mysteries without going into a lecture. It give young boys a chance to feel like they are not alone in their struggles and changes.

Highly recommended for boys and girls ready to learn a little more about puberty. Not recommended for anyone under age 9 or so.
