Exposing the Beauty of the Black in Venus

In the sensual nudity of a truly liberated Black woman, Dr. Janell Hobson, unabashedly tackles the objective/objecting gaze of White America both past and present. In her book, Venus in the Dark: Blackness and Beauty in Popular Culture, she seeks to reclaim the beauty of the callipygian frame by allowing the full buttocks and breasts of zaftig Black women to unapologetically speak for themselves, unhindered by the voyeuristic gaze of the Other. Dr. Hobson not only allows the reader to examine the `blaxploitation' inflicted upon women from science and artistic media, but she demands that we challenge contemporary transgressions. Sara Baartman, of the infamous Hottentot Venus exhibition, was paraded around in front of men who hatefully lusted after her unrefined curves. Is this emotional slavery somehow different from Janet Jackson's pierced breast appearing on the World Wide Web, far beyond her control, to further give White men the ability to gaze and critique the `primitive' African body for which he has no appropriate perspective lens?

It seems that because of dark matter, dark energy and dark (weak) gravity, our universe has the right attributes for the development of complex structure and the evolution of intelligent life that can engage in the quest to understand our world. These “dark” or more hidden attributes of the cosmos have very good outcomes. In particular, the existence of dark matter makes it easier to form complex structures, including galaxies, stars and planets through gravitational collapse of denser regions of the universe. Planets are the most suitable abodes for the development of life. Dark energy acts to extend the lifetime of the universe by counteracting gravity and driving continued expansion of the universe. Even as far back as the 1930s there has been evidence that most of the matter in the universe was not visible via electromagnetic radiation (optical light, radio waves, etc.). By the last few decades of the 20th century, the case for a considerable amount of this dark matter was very strong. It is the second largest contributor to the total mass-energy of the universe. We don’t know what it is and there are various candidates to explain it; nevertheless we see the gravitational effects of dark matter everywhere on the largest scales. Recent observational results indicate that dark matter dominates by a factor of 6 relative to the ordinary matter that makes up stars, planets, and living things. We now know that the major contributor to the mass-energy of the universe is not the substantial dark matter, but the ‘newer’ so-called dark energy. Dark energy acts to some extent as a negative gravity, and for the last several billion years has driven the expansion of the universe to a faster and faster pace, overcoming even the gravitational effect of dark matter. We have a general idea that it is the irreducible energy found in every volume of space, even in the absence of matter – in the vacuum. We don’t understand why it takes the value that it does, one that is small in quantum particle physics terms, but nevertheless is of great significance on the large cosmological scale of the universe. The third important aspect to consider is not a mass-energy component, but the nature of gravity and space-time. The big question here is – why is gravity so relatively weak, as compared to the other 3 forces of nature? These 3 forces are the electromagnetic force, the strong nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force. Gravity is different – it has a dark or hidden side. It may very well operate in extra dimensions beyond the normal 4 dimensions of space-time that we can observe. This is what we mean in this book by “dark gravity”.

Stephen Perrenod holds Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in Astronomy from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s in Physics from M.I.T. His primary research focus was on the cosmological evolution of X-ray emitting clusters of galaxies. After several years as a postdoctoral researcher in astrophysics he moved into the High Performance Computing field, where he has worked for over a quarter century. He has been a frequent public speaker on HPC, Grid and Cloud computing topics. Well written by a physicist currently involved in this type of reseach!

This was one of the better books I have read on the subject that is really more for the devoted science geek and, since I am one of those type of people, it held my interest from beginning to end. Much of the subject matter, however, is as yet unproven experimentally, but the ideas are based on more than just fancy.

I would highly recommend this book to people who have a background in science and a strong desire to learn about the interesting theories and thoughts on this new branch of research.

Its a great overall coverage of the history of cosmology.

Really good explanations of the issues and different avenues of investigation. Doesn't include the later Higgs boson and gravitational wave discoveries but nonetheless talks about the search for the former and mentions the tiny variations in CMB. Also talks about the possible outcomes for where the universe is heading.

The author pulls together the latest thoughts about Dark stuff and makes it all sound like there are some answers. Time and more experimental data will fill in a few blanks and expose many more. I only can hope that we don't destroy ourselves out of ignorance before we find the real Grand Unifying Theory.

A classic field handbook for manufacturing professionals

This textbook, which has been around for a number of years and has undergone a few revisions, has become the standard preparatory text for APICS tests and college-level production/operations management courses in dozens of universities.
The content is very broad - it covers almost the entire gamut of P/OM topics to some degree. That may be the only drawback to this book: it so broad in its topical coverage that there may be examples where the authors could have gone deeper in their presentation on specific subjects.
But even so, this charactertistic of being "100 miles wide and a few miles deep" works very well for readers who need a comprehensive primer on P/OM. That would include people just entering the field, or those that need to undestand the primary subject matters and areas of study, to point them in new directions.
I highly recommend this book as a foundation reference guide to your business library. Again, I know of many books that may be deeper in specific areas of P/OM, but I know of no book that encompasses so many topics and does and admirable job of presenting those topics. I would also caution the seasoned, highly-read P/OM professional in buying this book, but leave it for those newcomers to the field.

An excellent reference and resource - A "current classic"

This book is a classic: depth of information over a broad body of knowledge.
The error mentioned by another reviewer appears on p. 488: the "L-bar" term should be squared. Verifying dimensional homogeneity [i.e.that units of measure calculate consistently across the expression and result in "items" {whatever units demand is carried = units of safety stock}]) would alert a reader quickly that the product in the first term is incorrect.

Too wordy and lengthy content to focus the points well

Even if it is taken as the popular textbook for MPC, I'd rather read the another one: "Introduction to the materials management" by Arnold and Chapman. I can not easily catch the points and feel muddled after reading long sections and words in this book. However, the examples and case studies here are worthy to have a big picture for those who are new in this field.

About the Author
Sally Mann is one of America’s most renowned photographers. Her work has been exhibited around the world and is held by such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. She has received numerous honors, including a doctorate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Washington, D.C., and a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship.

Reynolds Price was the author of numerous books, including A Long and Happy Life (1962), volumes of short stories, poems, plays, essays, and memoirs. He was the James B. Duke Professor of English at Duke University.

What a Book

Wonderful autobiography about a courageous, talented, free-spirited, and kind-hearted woman. It was absolutely absorbing to come to understand how her life experience was embodied in the subjects that she focused on. As a southerner, I was lead by Mann to recall once again what it was to grow up white in Louisiana in the fifties, and to understand in a deeper way how out of touch we whites actually were with blacks in general, but more specifically with our loving black maids, who raised us like their own children. Many of us sensed that something was fundamentally wrong with our lives, our churches, and our families, but we also knew that trying to talk about these things with our parents and pastors would not be well received. What cowards must of us were; I have always felt guilty about this, as Mann so bravely described in her own life. A stunning book, one of the best that I have read in years. Sally Mann is a national treasure.

This is a well-produced book of lovely family photographs. Some are unposed, but those that are posed are not elf-conscious, "studio-like" pictures, and the children do not seem to be inhibited, even when nude. My only criticism,if you could call it that, would be that the children all look so serious. A smile here or there would not go amiss.

Very good "Art Photography" book, worth owning

I don't know how many editions of this book are available on Amazon but I bought this one because it's supposed to have even better print/ image quality than earlier books (I think cheaper too). The images are generally well composed, some seem well thought out and others more like quick snapshots ( yet I understand Mrs. Mann uses a large format camera, probably magazine page size negatives- hardly a "snapshot" camera!). I didn't count the nudes (most just of her three children) but they tend to be casual in nature, not "sexy"and probably number fewer than "clothed" portraits. If you have any acceptance of nude photographs these won't upset you.
Hardly any of the portraits are split between pages, in this edition at least.
From what I've seen of her work this may be Sally Mann's best book, worth owning by collectors of art photography.

Clear and precise.....even I can understand it.

I am a Hemingway fan and I don't care what all those snooty college professors say. I also enjoy clean, crisp, clear language. Trouble is he makes me angry because I keep thinking "Hey! That's the way I would have said it too."
Nice stuff and much easier to read and understand than Faulkner. I think Hemingway and Cormac McCarhty would have gotten along fine sitting in a bar.
But maybe not.
