Damn you, Joyce!

I knew I was a fan of Joyce Carol Oates after being forced to read her by an English prof in college. She has a perspective and a skill with prose that really impressed my impressionable bachelor's degree mind. I'll grant, however, I am not a big reader and don't keep up with Oates' complete catalog. It was about a month ago when I ran across this title and thought, "Wow, Joyce Carol Oates is doing her take on the latest zombie phenomenon? I need to check this out." Dumb a**. Of course, she's not writing about zombie zombies. But that's kinda what I thought when I started reading it. I didn't know anything about it, much less that this book was originally published more than a decade ago.

I think coming into it virtually blind made the book a more intense experience for me vs. someone who has read the reviews, synopsis and so on. (Kinda like how I enjoyed "The Blair Witch Project" more than most because I went into it blind and believing.)

For that reason, I'm not sure how much I actually want to say about the story. When I got the book, I began reading it right away just because I was in a reading mood. Then I couldn't put it down. I wanted to, though. I felt like throwing up at least four or five times while reading it.

I wasn't finished with the story when I had to put the book down to go make a living. After I'd put it down I was reluctant to pick it up again. I'd pass by it on the bookshelf and give it the stink eye.

Then, finally, the other night all the circumstances collided making it the right time to finish this book.
It's a slim read, practically a novelette. But it's a testament to Oates' abilities. She knows just how to turn a phrase, flip syntax, reroute a time line - like a puppet master pulling at the threads of your emotion. It's so funny how unassuming she seems in person, her lady-next-doorness. She's pretty damn brilliant.

Despite that, I cannot recommend this book to anyone I know because it is just too damn creepy. It would be like recommending rape or something. That's it. My mind has been raped! Okay, well, it's not that bad. Well, sorta. I don't know. I mean, it's basically the journal of a sociopath who describes in calm self-righteous detail his gruesome and terrifying deeds.

It got me to thinking about how a lot of people are like this, maybe everyone. Not the horrifying sadosexual acts, but just that sociopathic drive to get what you want - trudging a path to a self-serving goal without a thought to those hurt along the way.

Yet Quentin is hurt by those he hurt. He finds ways to be offended and victimized by his own victims as he stalks and tortures them - completely insane.

In the end you realize, really, Quentin is the zombie - dead inside, a soulless automaton on a path of destruction. I so desperately wanted to reach through the pages and stop him. But I couldn't. I could only read on, paralyzed. The horror.

That night, after I'd put the book down, I got ready for bed, got under the covers and turned out the light. About 10 minutes later I got up, grabbed Zombie and put it outside on the patio, went back in and locked the door.

Because I'm such a contemplative reader, I usually keep all the books I read. I like to refer back to them, remember lines and phrases. However, "Zombie" is going with me on my next visit to the used book store - it will ride in the trunk of the car, of course. I don't need Quentin anywhere near me again. Though I am afraid he will forever reside in my paranoia.

Gruesome but compelling

Zombie repulsed me. The narrator, Quentin P., is loathsome, sick. But in Oates' hands, the brutal serial killer becomes someone we almost know. Oates plunges us into Quentin's world and forces us to acknowledge that his madness is not without its own twisted logic. You see, all Quentin wants is someone in his life he can love and control completely. Zombie's horror is not so much in what Quentin does, but in how he recounts it: He describes his crimes the way my son might talk about his day at school. Zombie is short and taut, more like the novels Oates pens under her pseudonym, Rosamond Smith, than like her longer works. Gruesome, yes, but a compelling read.

Inside the mind of a serial killer

In this short and startling 1995 novel, Joyce Carol Oates again proves her expertise and versatility as a writer by getting inside the mind of a serial killer. The book is written as a diary, with bizarre capitalizations and crude drawings. She uses simple prose as the serial killer's dark obsession and demented scheming becomes clear and the reader is drawn into the workings of his mind. It is horrifying. The tension never lets up as one victim after another falls victim to his needs. The worst part is that we have all read the papers and know that there are really sickos like this out there in the world.

High hopes, no delivery

The other reviews had me intrigued and the plot sounded fun and interesting as there would be more than the requisite H/h that other novels offer. I also like trying new authors and some that aren't as well known. This book unfortunately missed the mark in so many ways. The authors jumps from character to character in the first person. One minute your listening to the inner workings of character A and one paragraph later it's character B. At one point I had to re-read a few sentences because I couldn't tell who was who.

The "sexy" part of the book was utterly unsexy. I am all for taking chances and pushing the envelope but I had to skim through a lot of it cause it was boring, repetitive and shamelessly derived. Apparently people fell in love but I'm not sure where it happened because you never read about it.

The book was all about telling and no showing. I have no idea how many books this author has written, maybe this is the first and she desperately wants to be the next E. L James??? She needs to spend more time working on her craft though.

SOMETIMES FATHER DOES NOT KNOW BEST

I am a fan of Victoria Winters books, and this one did not disappoint. It is a bit of a comedy of errors with the daughters of the late Duke and Duchess of Westchester. Lillian, Evelyn and Gwendolyn were taken in by Edmund Preston, the Earl of Newcastle, a dear friend of their parents. During the year of a proper morning, they were dressed and treated as children and placed in the nursery along with a Nanny and Governess. When in fact, these three young ladies were 21, 20 and 19 years of age. The plot kept me captivated as the story unfolds. The antics of Lillian and Gwendolyn are humorous and the dialog is entertaining. I loved the twists and turns that kept the pages turning. This is an erotic historical where three adult women were treated as children and subjected to age play elements and harsh spankings. Love doesn't come in the form of parent arranged betrothals, and sometimes contracts must be broken to have an HEA ending.

I returned it for a refund, read it until it was about 10% left but i just did not care anymore to finish it. I have read many books with the theme discipline etc and enjoyed them. Many authors can use that theme but still the h in the books have their sense of dignity and they are always punished by the H and because they actually did something wrong.

THIS book however left a bad taste in my mouth. The girls were used terribly by the staff and i can not believe that the guardian would let his staff take such liberties with the wards! The discipline was most of the time dished out by the nannies and governesses and ir was not in the slightest way erotic. And what is up with the butler deciding to have the laundress give the girls an enema??!!!WTF!

Not worth reading or bying.

AIDAN DODSON is a senior research fellow in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Bristol, where he teaches Egyptology. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2003. He is the author of Amarna Sunset (AUC Press, 2009) and Poisoned Legacy (AUC Press, 2010).

For the Scholar

My first experience with Ancient Egypt was as a child at a 1964 Tutankhamun exhibit. I have read much since then. It is my favorite historical subject. I am familiar with the author's other work, and highly respect his scholarly ability. That ability comes through again in this book. Here he again sheds light on another obscure period of Egyptian history. I have no doubt as to the accuracy of his writing, which I cannot say for a number of other Egyptologists here and there.The problem I have with this book is that IMO it's far more about genealogy and monument building than historical trends and events, to an obsessive degree. The micro far outweighs the macro. During the centuries after the Ramsesses and before the Assyrians, it seems that every who's who was marrying or competing with every other who's who, or building, restoring, usurping or adding to some architecture somewhere. So in a sense this book is a bit like the book of Genesis. It gets preoccupied with minutiae during an age when international affairs were evolving quickly and Egypt was becoming more and more of an anachronism.
Now after all these years I am and forever will be an amateur when it comes to Ancient Egyptian studies. I make money doing a whole different thing. If you are or plan to be a scholar of Ancient Egypt and/or this period in its history then I would strongly recommend this book to you. If you are a casual reader I'd say the opposite. If you are in between, well, then I'd say be prepared perhaps to get frustrated with the amount of detail for its own sake and stay clear on what you are looking for in the book. Be ready to draw your own generalizations and conclusions, because the author sticks to his descriptive, fact-oriented microscope. In sum, I think the book is a valuable addition to inferentially understanding the "afterglow" and centuries' long downhill slide of Ancient Egypt from a micro viewpoint, with "I didn't know thats" sprinkled throughout. But it is not an easy read.

Dense but highly informative

This wasn't written for the layperson with a casual interest in ancient Egyptian history. It's an argument for redating of the post-New Kingdom dynasties, a controversial point amongst scholars. Thus it is packed with facts and evidence to support his thesis. He assumes his reader is already well aware of this period of history and the traditional interpretation and can therefore evaluate and appreciate his reinterpretation. It is an excellent source for what it is, but unless you are nearly a scholar in the field yourself, it won't be of great interest.

Most people do not realize that ancient Egypt continue to be a powerhouse for almost a thousand years after the time of King Tutankhamun and Rameses the Great. The monuments left o us from this time period tell of a time of division and confusion among the different parts of Egypt trying to play the game that had always been played in terms of what Pharoah should do.
Mr. Dodson has written several other books - including The Poisoned Legacy- which deals in great detail on the later periods in Ancient Egyptian History. This one covers this late period in great detail - almost too much so.
Still, it is a period that has been neglected in the past and Mr. Dodson corrects that oversight.
Mainly for hard-core Egyptology enthusiasts.
