The Overcoming Insomnia treatment program uses evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) methods to correct poor sleep habits. CBT has been proven in multiple studies to improve sleep by reducing time spent in bed before sleep onset, reducing time spent awake after first sleep onset, and increasing the quality and efficiency of sleep. Developed by Jack D. Edinger and Colleen E. Carney, this second edition has been thoroughly updated according to the DSM-5, which now conceptualizes insomnia as a sleep-wake disorder, rather than a sleep disorder only. The DSM-5 has also eliminated the differentiation between primary and secondary insomnias, so this program provides an expanded discussion of daytime related issues as well as delivery issues specific to those with comorbid mental and medical problems. Patients are first given information about healthy sleep and the reasons for improving sleep habits, then a behavioral program is developed to address that patient's specific sleep problems. Use of a sleep diary, assessment forms, and other homework (all provided in the corresponding patient Workbook) allows client and therapist to work together to develop an effective sleep regimen tailored specifically for each client, and several sessions are dedicated to increasing compliance and problem-solving.

About the Author

Jack D. Edinger, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, CO. Dr. Edinger is one of the world leaders in insomnia treatment and insomnia research. He is recognized internationally for his research and clinical leadership in the areas of insomnia diagnosis and treatment. His early case series studies are among the very first to document the effectiveness of current-day cognitive behavioral insomnia therapy approaches. He has over 32 years of research and clinical experience working with insomnia patients.

Colleen E. Carney, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Sleep and Depression Laboratory at Ryerson University in Toronto. Dr. Carney is a world renowned expert in comorbid insomnias and the treatment of insomnia with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). In the Sleep and Depression Laboratory she trains graduate students and treatment providers in CBT for insomnia. She also provides CBT training workshops worldwide. She uses the treatment described in this book in her randomized controlled trials, funded by such agencies as the National Institute of Mental Health, Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the National Institute for Nursing Research. Dr. Carney is passionate about improving access to empirically supported insomnia therapy to patients.

Okay - two things got me that I am a little disappointed with - ISA 95 and Hitchhikers Guide. The book is okay at providing a very basic overview. I fell short with the two reason why I bought the book in the first place ISA 95 and Hitchhikers Guide entertainment.

"And Who Shall Stand....?"

While an extraordinary reaction by a wartime pastor to man's inhumanity to man, with (spoiler here) an interesting twist to the reason for Christ's appearance in the world, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping for re-assurance of purpose from an omnipotent God of intention. In all fairness however, within the limitations of a theatrical play, Rutenborn brilliantly manages to involve the audience in exploring their own violated sense of justice. In the final analysis, his pastoral attempt to help humanity explore the nature of God in The Sign of Jonah is both successful and satisfying. Consider as a" read".

Short but impactful.

Loved it and still love it. I have read it several times (only 75 pages) and still cannot get through the ending without choking up. When no one wants to take the blame for all the evil mankind is capable of, even ourselves, we end up shaking our fist at God and blaming Him. This play reveals in such an artful and beautiful way, that we have a God who, although is NOT to blame, willingly takes the blow we deserve. Can't say anymore.....a must read

Electroweak and Strong Interaction: Phenomenology, Concepts, Models, begins with relativistic quantum mechanics and some quantum field theory which lay the foundation for the rest of the text. The phenomenology and the physics of the fundamental interactions are emphasized through a detailed discussion of the empirical fundamentals of unified theories of strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. The principles of local gauge theories are described both in a heuristic and a geometric framework. The minimal standard model of the fundamental interactions is developed in detail and characteristic applications are worked out. Possible signals of physics beyond that model, notably in the physics of neutrinos are also discussed. Among the applications scattering on nucleons and on nuclei provide salient examples. Numerous exercises with solutions make the text suitable for advanced courses or individual study. This completely updated revised new edition contains an enlarged chapter on quantum chromodynamics and a widely updated chapter on neutrino physics.

Magnificent Obsession is an old memory of my youth

Lloyd C. Douglas wrote many inspirational stories some years ago and I remembered being particularly touched by his story of a young surgeon who discovers a way to make his life meaningful.in my youth. I purchased this book to reconnect with the story and to remember his method of making a difference. While I don't personally agree with the sentiments I found the idea interesting and challenging. The writing is in that inspirational genre and is sentimental rather than probing and analytical, however I felt that I was more than capable of reading the book for the idea rather than the sentiment and as such I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the idealised look at a past generation.

I really didn't enjoy this book, I found the writing style quite cryptic and therefore spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the author was talking about or, who the author was talking about, no not my cup of tea... sorry Lloyd C Douglas fans.
