HATED some parts but this books deserves 5 stars!

This book was written almost 30 years ago?!! I was astonished when I read that, because this book reads like a modern day book, a VERY well written modern day novel.

I must admit, I hate romance novels with bad hero/heroines and after reading the reviews here, I almost passed on it. Well let me tell you, I am glad I tried it. Up most, what you gotta keep in mind is, this can NOT be considered a "romance" book.. you'll HATE it if you start this book thinking that. You must have an open mind, know that in this book you'll see the heroine abused horribly again, and again... raped, kidnapped, horrible hero who cheats EVERY other day ( I swear ), and the heroine puts up with it. This makes it worse, where was the heroine's pride? Yep, your typical 70s book. I remember one scene, SPOILER HERE :

After the hero kidnaps the heroine, he takes her to a whore house to hide her, he then goes to another room to shower and to have sex with one of the girls and the heroine is right next door, he then comes in the room see's she's been crying, asleep... he thinks about having sex with her too, right after having sex with a whore... that pissed me off! LOL, yes, horrible hero, and there were many, many scenes like this here, he was a male slut!

There are so many reviews here so read those for plots I wont go into that... You will enjoy this dark "fiction" novel with a dark hero and a beautiful heroine who will do anything and put up with anything for her love for this undeserving hero ( imho ). That part drove me nuts...

Nevertheless, this book deserves 5 stars because I was thoroughly entertained, I seriously could NOT put this hateful, woman degrading novel down, I became addicted to this epic novel mid way. There are so many twists, so many awful things the hero does and the heroine goes through that will make you grind your teeth and yet, YOU will sit there losing sleep because you just gotta read another page....

IT WAS THAT GOOD.. Yes, I hated this book as a female reader but damn, what a novel.

Entertaining But Not For Everyone

Sweet Savage Love is about a naive girl full of romantic fancies who confronts the more lurid realities of life and love. Ginny is caught in more situations than some readers might find easy to swallow. There is also an element of forced seduction involving Ginny and Steve Morgan that readers might find offensive. However, there is a deep, unrecognized attraction between the hero and heroine that is not present in Ginny's other encounters. It is not mature love at first. However, most love takes time to grow. The novel is set in the background of the American Southwest and in Mexico during the rebellion against the Emperor Maximillian. The reader gets a small taste of history and the feel for the injustices and turmoil which resulted in this war. However, this is primarily a romance novel to entertain. Steve and Ginny both go through a lot but this does occur during a tumultous (sp?) time in history. Ginny's morals or lack thereof may sour some readers but she is the product of her upbringing and her experiences. Steve Morgans liasons with women are also not high up on the moral ladder but he is the typical male with double standards of whom there are plenty today. Sweet Savage Love is a novel to be enjoyed and not to be analyzed too seriously. Another good Rosemary Rogers novels which is completely separate from Steve and Ginny is The Wildest Heart. This second novel is not quite a dramatic as Sweet Savage Love. Readers might find it a bit easier to swallow.

The Romance Classic, A Publishing Phenomenon

As a romance writer, I am revisiting the classics that launched the entire powerful arm of publishing, (the romance genre), and I ordered an old original copy of "Sweet Savage Love." Wow. No wonder this sold millions and was imitated. What a masterfully written book. Exciting and completely plunges a reader into this world. Told in multiple POV's, loaded with adverbs, yet still penned with clarity, this story happens in parts of the U.S. and in Mexico, during the Civil War era. Ginny, the heroine, is half-French, half-American, and Steve Morgan, the dark hero, is half-American, half-Hispanic. The riveting non-stop action spans all their adventures and suffering, and the dysfunctional, wildly physical nature between the leads. Morgan is an unapologetic rake, treating women like used Kleenex, but to me, the guy's harsh gunslinger / mercenary lifestyle fits his character. He wouldn't whistle Yanni tunes in a woman's ear, or offer to wash the dishes while she rests in a recliner. He's selfish and calculating, an adrenaline junkie. Ginny has perhaps the bigger character arc, and she endures horrors when she is captured and forced into prostitution, (white slavery). That part of the book required teeth-gritting. In the end, I found Ginny had more steel than Steve, moving from a Paris Hilton type of pampered existence in the opening, and emerging as a strong, multi-faceted woman who won't back down from working hard. She gets lost in her gypsy dancing. She's strong, yet sensuous, enjoys her seductive power over men, eventually, after recovering from the brutality she suffers. A complete foil for the heartless Steve, who, in spite of himself, grows attached to her - even thinks of her when he's with other women. He is the one a reader gets frustrated with, because Ginny is resourceful, catches on fast, and he can't "see" her value, because he can't form normal emotional attachments. But what a reader discovers, is the pages fly by and you want to see these two together, even as they rant (lots of exclamation points!) and tear off their clothes with passion. It's a no-holds-barred, tough, unrelenting, and to me - honest. This was a harsh landscape, not genteel or civilized. Throughout most of recorded human history, women were treated slightly above cattle. (I exaggerate, maybe a tad better than that - but no real rights)

Plus, just watch an episode of "Mad Men" and how women were treated in the 1960's. That's just a quick glimpse of how women could be dismissed.

Ginny stabs Steve when he tries to take her by force, and she is raped, multiple times. Truly horrifying. I recall seeing a WWII book and an image of a beautiful Jewish girl who was raped in the streets by German soldiers. This exploitation has happened throughout history. "Sweet Savage" delivers an unpleasant dose of reality.

It doesn't make it right, or wrong, it's just a part of human brutality. Look what the Romans did to people in their Coliseum.

Newer romances have none of the suffering these characters endure, they are more politically correct, and I hate to say it, bland... essentially forgettable. This can seem way over-the-top for more refined tastes. Me, I like all kinds of books, ugly, raw, pretty, sensitive, etc. "Jane Eyre" is my favorite romance - this is the antithesis to the intellect Jane and tortured, impassioned Rochester, which are more cerebral characters and reflect the setting.

I thought this passage was especially powerful:

"Steve Morgan, who had always prided himself on his cold detachment from emotional entanglements now found, as he galloped toward Zacatecas, that the prospect of seeing Ginny again was almost worth facing a firing squad for. If they were going to execute him in any case, they would probably allow him a few minutes alone with her. He could take her in his arms and taste the wonderful texture of her lips again, and feel her small, perfectly shaped breasts pressing against his chest. He'd tell her -- yes, what did it matter now? Before they killed him, he'd tell her he loved her."

About the Author
Dr. Carl S. Warren is Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Georgia, Athens. Dr. Warren has taught classes at the University of Georgia, University of Iowa, Michigan State University, and University of Chicago. He focused his teaching efforts on principles of accounting and auditing. Dr. Warren received his PhD from Michigan State University and his BBA and MA from the University of Iowa. During his career, Dr. Warren published numerous articles in professional journals. Dr. Warren has served on numerous committees of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He also has consulted with numerous companies and public accounting firms. His outside interests include handball, golf, skiing, backpacking, and fly-fishing.

Dr. James M. Reeve is Professor Emeritus of Accounting and Information Management at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Reeve taught full-time as part of the accounting faculty for 25 years after graduating with his PhD from Oklahoma State University. He presently teaches part-time at UT. His teaching efforts focused on Senior Executive MBA programs. Beyond this, Dr. Reeve is very active in the Supply Chain Certification program, which is a major executive education and research effort of the university. His research interests include work in managerial accounting, supply chain management, lean manufacturing, and information management. He has published more than forty articles in leading academic and professional journals. He has consulted or provided training around the world for a variety of organizations, including Boeing, Procter & Gamble, Norfolk Southern, Hershey Foods, Coca-Cola, and Sony. When not writing books, Dr. Reeve plays golf and is involved in faith-based activities.

Dr. Jonathan Duchac is the Wayne Calloway Professor of Accounting and Acting Associate Dean of Accounting Programs at Wake Forest University. He earned his PhD in accounting from the University of Georgia and currently teaches introductory and advanced courses in financial accounting. Dr. Duchac has received a number of awards during his career, including the Wake Forest University Outstanding Graduate Professor Award, the T.B. Rose award for Instructional Innovation, and the University of Georgia Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Duchac has served as Accounting Advisor to Merrill Lynch Equity Research, where he worked with research analysts in reviewing and evaluating the financial reporting practices of public companies. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has worked with a number of major public companies on financial reporting and accounting policy issues. In addition to his professional interests, Dr. Duchac is an avid mountain biker and snow skier.

Bring this back into print!

It is fortunate that I have a copy of this book, but I would wish for it to be brought back into print for everyone's benefit, everyone being those who are interested in the life of Lord Byron, as well as the definitive "Romantic Hero." I have yet to see any biographies or criticism on Byron that have outdone any of Marchand's work. His painfully meticulous inquiry into Byron's life, as well as the lives of his associates, is second only to his vibrant way of weaving all of this information together to bring forth the portrait of Byron. This is not only a portrait of Byron, but one of the general Romantic Hero; anyone who is interested in the culture and history of this period of time, as well as Romanticism in general, would benefit intellectually from reading this book. If you wish to know more about Byron's role in the struggles for Greek independence, about the various rumors intertwined with Byron's love associations, about his interactions with the Shelley family, or about his personal quirks, then you will enjoy this book immensely. Luckily, Marchand is able to balance out his portrait without slipping into "gossip column writer mode."
In an age when academic types write books to show off theoretical knowledge or a large vocabulary, it is refreshing to see a book that relies more on actual knowledge rather than theory; indeed, the writing style is neither pedantic nor alienating. Readers who are not formal students of literature will feel more than comfortable with this book, while those who are engaged in formal scholarship will find this an enlightening example of pure and true scholarship.

Stephen Teilhet earned a degree in electrical engineering, but soon afterwards began to write software for the Windows platform. For the last 11 years, he's worked for several consulting firms on a wide range of projects, specializing in Visual Basic, Visual C++, MTS, COM, MSMQ, and SQL Server. He has been working with the .NET technologies since the pre-alpha version of the 1.0 .NET framework was being developed by Microsoft. Clear, Concise and Detailed examples

I'm an intermediate coder, familiar with programming and I have about 1.5 years programming C#. I've already used this book(C# Cookbook 2nd edition) to write C# code navigating in and around directories and files. The examples in the book regarding "Directory Info" and "File Info" were so clear and concise, I was able to complete my programming task with almost no lost time to the learning process. What I like most was that there was not one example, but many examples for the most used functionalities. This book has already paid for itself when I consider the time it saved me the first time I needed it!

Buy it - yesterday

A friend lent me their copy of the book when I was trying to figure something out. Ten minutes later I ordered my own copy. This book is great.

What it is is for about 70 small programming problems, it shows you how to write it. Both the code and the explanation. So in many cases you can just copy the code. And if what you need is a little different, the explanation gives you the knowledge you need.

One note - I did find one place where the code they gave was more complex and less efficient than necessary. So it's not perfect. But the code they gave did work.

This is exactly what a cookbook should be, it's as simple as that. If you are a C# programmer you would be making a mistake to not have a copy of this fantastic reference book by your side. For any book to be named a "cookbook" I would expect a myriad of problems to be tackled, and a variety of subjects. I wouldn't want a thin reference manual, yet I wouldn't want problems to go on for pages and pages and pages. Ideally an examination of a wide variety of issues with concise, straightforward solutions is optimal, and that's exactly what this book provides.

Great Intro on Pricing

I am a serial entrepreneur, a University lecturer in Russia, Italy and the USA in Business Economics and International Law and am an international business and peak performance consultant. As such, I have read a plethora of business, motivational, peak performance, coaching, team building psychology type of books over 22 years. In fact I have enough books at home, on these subjects, to sink several ships. I therefore have read many books looking at what makes great entrepreneurs and how the best motivate employees and develop every greater businesses. I therefore have used both my real life business experience and theoretical knowledge to review this book.

Pricing is a very subjective thing and this author does examine and highlight the problem. You only need to look at car pricing on craigslist or autotrder to see great price differentials on the same car with the same mileage etc. Very often private owners will "over value" their beloved car, pricing it above market levels as they perceive, through emotion, that it is worth more than a car sold by a dealer. The concept of "Value" is an incredibly subjective thing, yet it is at the core of pricing. This author looks at these problems of perception, value and why some are willing to pay more for a product than others. The author does this by examining the imaginary pricing system behind a product called "chocolate teapots" and how the price is derived for this product. The ideas are very good as an introduction to the concepts of pricing and psychology, but there are other books on the market that go into the subject in a far more technical manner and examine other areas of pricing problems. If you are looking for a definitive text examining all pricing concepts then this book is not for you.

The book is a great easy read for anyone interested in the subject of pricing. It is does not examine every area of the subject but gives a good introduction to the subject.

Step by step story telling book !

My "Liking" of this book is based on my limited knowledge of psychology of pricing. I am a business effectiveness consultant to mostly service companies, my interaction with setting physical product pricing is limited. That's why this book was an eye opener for me.
The thing I did not like is the form of the book; the font is so small and the pages are packed, the paper is thick. Al in all I suffered few pages until I decided to buy it again on Kindle format.

I recommend the book for any new comer to the world of pricing, it is a step by step story telling kind of book. If only the publisher was giving the author better form options!

Slam bam thank you ma'am get onto the business of pricing!

This is a VERY quick and VERY good overview of pricing techniques and very much tilted towards action and practicality. For anyone who just needs some quick advice and needs to get on with it - the book is spot on.

Leigh used a literary storytelling technique in her book that I personally did not care for. On one hand she was TOTALLY up front about it saying it just that - a useful, illustrative literary technique. Using this she was able to provide the situational awareness that made every chapter's content make perfect sense. That being said, I simply couldn't get past the fact that it was fiction. I would have LOVED if her anecdotes could have been from actual true clients with the names changed to protect the guilty. That being said, what Leigh did was useful and I think this book will be really good for many many people.

Also, Leigh's suggestions are founded on research. She doesn't give that to you, you must trust her. I think that is OK and you should, but again, I want to make sure people understand this is LESS about the psychology of price and more about putting the psychology of price in action.

Good book - very action oriented. Keep up the good work Leigh.

Does Its Job

Think of this not as a book but as that comprehensive compilation of notes that you wished you had time to put together. As a data warehouse practitioner, I can certainly opine that the material collected here reflects the author's diligence in putting them together and does comprehensively cover all the important foundational ground related to the subject of modern (as of 2013) database concepts. You will see several concepts being discussed multiple times (such as OLAP), or more confusingly, being defined and redefined several times in the same section. Your satisfaction thus depends on adopting the right expectation that this writing is an excellent resource for interview preparation and keeping up-to-date with latest database trends and concepts, but forgiving a certain lack of polish and tighter editing that accompanies your typical technical book.

Great book!

Great book!

English is my second language and I have been using this book for practicing English pronunciation in my area of expertise.
Also, it has been very valuable when I needed to quickly refresh some database concepts. It is concise and clear, direct to the point.

I recommend this kindle book to ESL database developers professionals.

Actually, I bought two kindle books. One for myself and another as a gift for a dear colleague. She was very pleased with this book too.

Minot chronicles the family life of Gus and Rosie Vincent and their seven children, dubbed "monkeys" by their mother. Rosie, or "Mum," is the most vibrant character, creating a secure home for her children as she tries to mask her husband's alcholism and counter his withdrawal from the family. Minot has a fine eye for detail and a talent for creating tension through half-revealed clues in dialogue. However, because the book is very short, involves many characters, and spans roughly 13 years, the development of other characters is not satisfying. The chapters are rather disparate, the first, in fact, having a different narrator than the others. The final chapter, "Thorofare," was included in The Best American Short Stories of 1984 and is perhaps the strongest section, providing a moving ending to an otherwise uneven novel. The Space Between

"Monkeys" isn't a novel in the usual sense of the word. It is more of a collection of vignettes encompassing about 13 years in the life of a modern family, snapshots of moments in which we come to know each family member, then see how they change as their story progresses.

The most astonishing thing about the book is how Minot ties each piece together. For the most part, the "big" events in the life of the family happen outside the narrative itself, in the space between the snapshots we are given. We may experience these moments as a part of their memories, but we come to understand what they were and what their effect has been in a fractured flow of story.

Minot's prose, as in all her books, is expressive but spare, an economy of words that leaves much up to the reader's interpretation. She tells us just enough to know the family, to understand their quiet successes and their obvious failures, to see both the shape of the mask and what lies underneath it. She gives us the same kind of knowledge that we might have if they lived in a house down the street, a neighborly knowledge, not an intimate one.

For the most part, this is a strong point in the book, but at a few points, Minot's style puts the reader at a distance when we might prefer a closer understanding of the feelings of each family member. In a way, it's the same frustration one experiences when we know something has happened to a neighbor, but we don't know how to ask without seeming nosy or pushy. Perhaps this was a deliberate choice on Minot's part, this enforced distance from her characters, but intentional or not, it was frustrating at times.

Still, despite the occasional frustration, "Monkeys" is a well-rendered series of portraits of a modern American family, the foibles and wrinkles and soft tragedies that make up so much of the family landscape, and shape the people in it. Minot's writing is a delightful and refreshing change from the self-indulgent, overwrought prose most modern novelists love to employ, and in these brief vignettes, and the implication of events occurring between one and the next, we are given the chance to observe the quiet act of disintegration that goes on around us every day.

Painfully honest, yet entertaining and well written

This book describes one woman's painful childhood in an upper class New England family. The book deals with difficult subjects (alcoholic father, death of mother) with an acute deftness and touches of unexpected humor. The first chapter is written from the child's point of view and starts with a "typical" family Sunday of church, ice-cream, and the beach. It ends with the children and mother hiding in a linen closet to play a prank on the father. The ending of the chapter is unexpected, but rings oh-so-true. "Monkeys" is brush-stroke writing at its best.

Oh come on people - it's great

This is a brilliant little gem of a book! If you like "Our Fault in the Stars" you will love this one. It's about a family going through turmoil, but the turmoil isn't apparent at first, it's bubbling just under the surface. It's narrated by some of the kids, so it's got a great fish-out-of-water feel to it - everything through the eyes of a child looks different. Loved it. Highly recommended.
