In spite of the fact that this is a very silly book, Pilkey does also manage to include some anti-bullying messages. "One thing that had always bothered me throughout this series is that I'd never written an origin story. The first epic novel began with George and Harold as best friends. I'd only written a few sentences about their previous experiences together, and I really wanted to explore their past relationship more deeply. I wanted to know how they met. Did they have any other adventures BEFORE they created Captain Underpants?

So I thought about it. For many years I pondered these things. Eventually, I came up with a good story. But how could I tell it? It seemed strange to just release an origin story all by itself. There was no way to include it in the Captain Underpants series, because Captain Underpants wasn't around until the boys got into 4th grade. You can't have a Captain Underpants book WITHOUT Captain Underpants, can you?

For years I had wondered if I was ever going to get to tell the tale of George and Harold meeting, becoming friends, and battling against their very first enemy, Kipper Krupp.

Then I thought of Tippy. Tippy Tinkletrousers was very smart. He could build time machines. Perhaps a time machine might allow me to bring everybody back to when George and Harold were in kindergarten? Then I could tell that story!

So I wrote another story to "bookend" my tale about George and Harold and Kipper. The "bookend story" consists of the first 72 pages and the last 28 pages. It's one of the reasons why this book is so long (it's over 300 pages--- nearly three times as long as the first epic novel). Thanks to Tippy Tinkletrousers, I got to write the origin story that I'd been wanting to tell for years.

When people ask me what my favorite Captain Underpants book is, I always tell them it's this one. More specifically, it's the 200 page story-within-a-story that begins on page 73 of this book and ends on page 273. There aren't any superheroes in that story, and the tale is more grounded in reality than many of the other novels in this series, but for me, it has the most heart." -Dav Pilkey

　
Fun Facts:

1. Tippy Tinkletrouser's jailbird uniform has the number "84779" sewn on to the front. Mr. Krupp's uniform has the number "23669". Can you figure out the secret meaning behind this numerical system? For a hint, see #4 below.

2. George and Harold's first comic book, The Adventures of Dog Man was never meant to be anything more than a "one-shot" comic. Dav Pilkey didn't intend for it to become more than just a chapter in book #9. But shortly after the book came out, Dav began getting a lot of Dog Man fan mail. Kids really seemed to like that character (and they liked to draw him, too), so Dav began thinking of more stories about him.
In 2015, Dog Man will get his very own full-length book called Dog Man: World's Greatest Cop. Dav Pilkey is already working on a sequel.

3. Dav Pilkey is not very tech-savvy. He doesn't even OWN a cell phone. So when he illustrated this book (in which cell phones play a part in the story), he gave two of the three bullies "flip phones". Dav was unaware that "flip phone technology" had been outdated for years when he drew these illustrations. He is very sorry and promises to research things better in the future.

"HILARIOUS AND ENTERTAINING!"

Dav Pilkey delivers another fun-filled story in the ninth Captain Underpants novel. In this funny adventure, the boys have no choice but to face Kipper Krupp, the big bully, on their own. Tormented by Kipper in the past, the boys create a clever plan to defeat the bully, and this plan is filled with many unexpected upcoming events to finally seek revenge. 'Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers' will have any child laughing-out-loud as it entertains throughout. A triumph in this hilarious series, enjoyable, and Recommended for young readers!

Longest book of the series

I read this book aloud for my tween sons. We're fans of the series, and we all enjoyed it very much. The pranks were pretty funny and elaborate, and the story could be used as a jumping off point for a conversation about bullying. Do Harold and George go too far in bullying the bullies? What can you do when the principal (or another grown-up) ignores bullying in real life?

This book (#9) is by far the longest of the series at 303 pages. By comparison, "Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman" (#5) is the second longest book we own in the series, at 170 pages. Perhaps that's why we didn't like #9 quite as much as usual - it seemed in any case that the first 10 chapters were a little slow.

I must add: don't judge a book by its title. As a mom, I was very negative to the series before my boys got their first book of the series as a gift. We read it, and I liked it a million times more than I expected.

The Real EPIC Captain Underpants Book

Every Captain Underpants book is called an "epic novel", well, this time Pilkey has certainly presented fans with "the" Epic Captain Underpants novel. It is huge for a start (over 300 pages) and the plot is so convoluted it contains about three stories in one! This has got to be the best book in the entire series and I've already read book 10, but this one makes me want to read #10 again just to follow what happens next. After six years between books 8 & 9 being published, Pilkey put everything he had into this book; it is absolutely hilarious. Taking us into a future that was meant to be, a future that could have been and the one that really happened. We also go way back to when George and Harold were in kindergarten and first met. The majority of the book takes place within this storyline and is fantastic! I just loved it!

About the Author
Guy de Maupassant (1850-93) was a literary disciple of Flaubert and one of the group of young Naturalistic writers that formed around Zola. Maupassant's contribution to the Naturalists collaborative collection of tales, Les Soir�es de Medan, was 'Boule de suif', which remains one of the most well-known of the hundreds of stories he wrote over the course of his life and on which his literary reputation now rests. He also wrote six novels, including Bel-Ami (1885) and Pierre et Jean (1888).

Sian Miles was born in Wales and educated there and in France where she lived for many years. She now teaches at Warwick University and is the author of an anthology of the writings of Simone Weil, and translations of George Sand's Marianne, Violet Trefusis's Echo, and has collaborated on Paul Val�ry's Cahiers/Notebooks.

Literary vandalism. Buy the Roger Colet translation instead.

Reading this new edition is like visiting a museum that has just been looted. Astonishingly, several of the very best Maupassant stories (particularly "Madame Tellier's Establishment" and "Mouche") have been deleted and replaced with facile selections like "The Necklace," which was intentionally omitted from the 1973 Roger Colet translation because it was rightly deemed inferior and unrepresentative of the author. Inexplicably, and criminally, translator Sian Miles chooses the first (again inferior and greatly truncated) version of "The Horla" rather than the classic mood-swinging, diary-entry style of the famous final published version. Additionally, "The Christening" here is benign and slight compared to the harrowing story of the same title featured in the earliest Penguin Classics collection translated by H.N.P. Sloman (a very different group of stories, but as highly recommended as the Colet). What Miles has done in essence is anaesthetize the great short story writer (perhaps second only to D.H. Lawrence) and give us Maupassant Lite.

Worst of all is the sense of biographical revisionism and political correctness that pervades this collection. In her Introduction, Ms. Miles claims that previous Maupassant collections reveal him as "if not misogynistic, at least deeply cynical in his portrayal of women," and she has taken it upon herself to "redress that previous imbalance." Hard to believe Penguin let her get away with such nonsense. First of all, Maupassant was cynical about humankind: both men AND women. If anything, he largely pokes fun at men's egos and their consequent foibles in dealing with women, who mostly come across as more subtle and intuitive. Secondly, Miles's reading of Maupassant as a misogynist fails to account for the great female Maupassant heroines like Mouche, Madame Tellier, Boule de Suif, Mother Sauvage, and of course the tragic Jeanne from the novel "A Woman's Life (Un Vie)." In truth, Maupassant's greatest characters defy the kind of easy, simplistic categorization that Miles celebrates in describing "the stupid and brutal count in 'A Woman's Confession' or the insufferably chauvinistic doctor in 'Madame Husson's Rose King.'" Comments like these reduce Maupassant to a kind of 19th century Dr. Phil.

The difference in translations is also important to note. Take for example the closing passage of "Idyll":

Note how flat, clumsy and almost too contemporary Miles's translation is:
"'That's enough. I feel much better now. It's put new life in me.'
He got up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. As she replaced inside her dress the two living gourds of her bosom, she said, 'That was a great help, Monsieur. Thanks very much.'
Gratefully, he replied, 'My pleasure, Madame, I'll tell you. I've had no food for two days.'"

Now note how Colet carefully captures the flavor of the rustic dialogue. Also note the impact of his adding the paragraph break:
"'That's enough, I feel better now. That's put new life into me.'
He had stood up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
Pushing her breasts inside her dress, she said: 'That was a real good turn you did me, Monsieur. Thank you very much.'
And he replied gratefully: 'It's me as has to thank you, Madame. I hadn't had a thing to eat for two days.'"

The difference between "That was a great help" vs "That was a real good turn" and "My pleasure" vs "It's me as had to thank you" speaks for itself. This sort of thing is make-or-break when determining a quality translation.

Finally, Miles's Introduction fails to capture the loving and haunting quality that Roger Colet's does. Among other things, Colet's Introduction revisits the serious possibility that Flaubert may have been Maupassant's real father. The subject of illegitimacy is an important one in Maupassant's work (see the wonderful "Pierre and Jean"), but this fascinating and ambiguous connection is not even touched upon here. It is one of numerous egregious omissions and revisions that make this publication tantamount to literary vandalism.

An excellent collection of stories by Guy De Maupassant a French master of the genre

If you want to know what Paris and France was like in the nineteenth century you have a few options. You can indulge your eyes by savoring the beauties of the impressionist school as manifeste in the art works of such giants as Monet, Renoir, Manet, Sisley, Morisot, Cezanne, Sisley, Pissaro and their brothers and sisters of the brush. Or you can take a walk down the boulevard of such masters of the novel as Emile Zola and Gustave Flaubert. One of the most delightful paths of discovery, though, is to enjoy a few minutes or an hour pouring over one of the wonderful short stories by Guy De Maupasant (1850-1893).
Guy De Maupassant was born into a middle class family in Normandy. His mother's brother was a close friend of Flaubert. The older writer took Guy under his wing forwarding his short but important career. De Maupassant produced over 300 short stories from 1880-1890. In this Penguin collectin 34 of those masterpieces are printed. The book is translated from French to English by Sian Miles, While not discussing each of the tales I will give a brief outline of some of my favorites found within the black Penguin pages:
A Ball of Fat-Excellent story about a French prostitute called upon to sacrifice her body to a love mad Prussian officer. A brilliant example of De Maupassant's skill in exposing hypocrisy.
The Horla-The tale of a man who is tortured by an invisible double. This story hints at the author's growing fear of becoming mad due to his syphillis affliction.
A Parisian Affair-A jaded French housewife has a casual affair with a fat aristocrat in Paris becoming quickly disillusioned with the dissolute life.
Mother Savauge-Classic tale of a Norman peasant woman who wreaks a horrible revenge on the Prussians in retaliation for the death in battle of her only son. Many of De Maupassant's stories are set in the Franco-Prussian war of 187-1871 in which he served as a French soldier.
Monsieur Jocaste-A controversial story of incest.
The Necklace-One of the best of De Maupassant's stories. An ironical story with an O Henry twist. (De Maupassant was a strong influence on authors such as O Henry, Henry James and Ernest Hemingway who all learned from his clarity, concision and skill in weaving a story to catch the reader's interest).
These stories are set in Paris and Normany, the hunting fields and the small villages of France. A birdseye view of French society is yours for the cost of this wonderful collection. The book has a good bibligraphy, footnotes and a sage introduction by Sean Miles. Highly recommended for the general reader. Vive La France!

Bought it for school, but may keep it for my personal library.

I bought this for an English class, and I actually quite like the stories. Maupassant wrote some really interesting stories with contrasting portrayals of women, and I have enjoyed reading them. I may keep this book for my personal shelf.

Further, the editors' position is that the teaching of geometry and spatial visualization in school should not be compressed into a characterization of Greek geometry, but should include attention to contributions to the mathematics of space that developed subsequent to those of the Greeks.

He also shows that revenue-raising considerations have weighed more heavily with the government than efficiency objectives.
