The collapse of society forces the Colter family to kill or be killed. To escape, they decide to return to Jesse’s childhood home of Haven. The Colters set a brutally effective trap. Jesse is severely injured, but survives. Sarah and Jesse, with the help of their friends, build a future and slowly things get better. At the end Jessie is alone and dying. It’s his time, and he feels complacent. He’s an old man with a bent back and a deep love for Sarah, sitting in a small clearing on the side of a mountain overlooking Haven.

Different and Engaging PA book

"Friends of the Family" certainly adds a unique plot twist with the four-legged friends. At first, I thought that was a bit incredible, but must admit that it grew on me as I read. The really interesting thing about this book is that it gets better as it progresses. I was definitely invested in the characters, all of whom were introduced in a plausible manner. There were 64 grammar errors, most of which were the less offensive type; so the author needs to do a better job of proofing/editing - email me if you want a better editor. But, this heartwarming story grabbed my interest and wouldn't let go.

I'm a retired school teacher, prepper, gun nut and survivalist who usually reads the hard core action SHTF books. I hope I never have to use all my weapons and gear; but better to have it and not need it than the opposite. This book does not have the continuous level of action typical of SHTF reading; but it had enough to maintain my interest. The surprise was how this author successfully incorporated the importance of family. Some TEOTWAWKI authors just give lip-service to how family life plays into the story - you get the feeling that their inclusion is written in as a politically-correct adornment. Not only is family the centerpiece of this story, re-building the community becomes the focus towards the end - as it should. Sometimes as a prepper it seems like my focus is skewed heavily towards defense, both SD and HD; and that is necessary if one is to survive at all. But, we all need reminding from time to time why it is we prepare to survive.

Joel's writing takes me directly back to my childhood when my paternal grandparents had an outhouse, drew well water, cooked on a wood-burning stove that also served as the main source of heat, grew a large garden and canned everything for future use that they didn't consume immediately. This book actually brought tears to my eyes, and made me think how sterile my modern country club home in a gated community is by comparison. The best times of my life were spent at joyous family gatherings in my grandparents' rickety old house. I wish they and that old house were still here. But, like Jessie and Sarah from the story, all things come to their end in time.

Thank you, Joel Baker, for the unexpected nostalgic journey you took me on. Keep writing!

Survival and Life!

From Ohio to Tennessee, a family is held together by triumphs and sadness.

The Colters learn to live in a time before the "go-back". They are protected by the Black Dogs! (Wait until you meet them and see what they are capable of doing).

Of course, there are some unsavory characters that need to be dealt with by the Colters.

This is a story of the family love that ties them together through all of their days on earth.

I guarantee that you will have tears in your eyes near the end of this one. Poignant and written from the heart.

Boss and Daisy and the other friends of the family

I enjoyed this post-apocalyptic story of Jesse and Sarah Colter, their family, human friends and "the friends of the family" - the canine friends that adopted the Colters.

Jesse, Sarah and clan moved from Liberty, Ohio to Haven, Tennessee to a simpler way of life in a valley long lived in by Jesse's family. Good vs. evil, family, protecting what is important to you - this book covers all of these things.

There are some editing issues in the book but I didn't find them too distracting. Jesse and Sarah are well developed characters but I wish their children's characters had been explored more and I especially wish the dogs had been in the story more.

I do know that there is a second book in the Colter saga - The Way of the Dogs (The Colter Saga) - and I'm going to be reading it next. So I hope my questions about the family and the dogs are answered in it.

This was an excellent low-key example of post-apocalyptic fiction and I appreciated the tale very much.

Well known for his research on project team leadership, he is the author of more than seventy research papers and five professional reference books on project and technology management. In 2000, he received the IEEE Engineering Management Society's Engineering Manager of the Year Award.

Boring!

This book has little to recommend it in my opinion.

He needs an editor--badly. It has a multiplicity of typos, which I find distracting. He defines jargon with more jargon. He cites his own work more than anyone else's. It's information-like but not really informative. When I finish reading a chapter, I don't feel like I've gotten one solid idea out of it. [Unfortunately I have to read it for a class I'm taking.]

The design of the book adds to its lack of readability.

The stories at the beginning of each chapter are interesting but he didn't write them.

My advice: Save your time and money. Approach management from the standpoint of commonsense and treat your employees the way you would want to be treated.

The term Technology-Intensive organizations is quite vague as it is. The Kindle copy works like a charm though preventing me from having to carry around my books all the time. I also made an A in my class! Can't Complain.

About the Author
Traci Rose Rider is co-founder and partner in Trace Collaborative, LLC. She received her Bachelors of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati and her Masters in Design and Environmental Analysis from Cornell University where her research looked at factors impacting environmental attitudes of designers. Rider is past-chair of and consultant for the Emerging Green Builders (EGB) Committee of the U.S. Green Building Council, servicing students and young professionals. She was granted the USGBC Leadership Award in Education for 2005 and was included in a group labeled as “The Re-Inventors” in Vanity Fair’s Green Issue, May 2006.
