One of the Best but Intensive Texts

It might not have lush photos and graphics, yet this revised printing version of "Introduction to Organic Chemistry" remains one of the most authoritative text for introductory level.
Readers are assumed solid mastery of one year of general chemistry since the coverage on electronic structure and bonding is succinct. Readers should be able to draw Lewis dot structures and identify the major resonance structures from all resonance structures, etc.
Two separate chapters discuss respectively organic structures and chapter reactions, who incorporate the simple chemistry of alkanes (hydrocarbons). Stereoisomerism is introduced early in the text so students can grasp this important concept and the consequence on reactions, reactivity and distribution of products.
Discussion on nucleophilic substitution reaction is somewhat obscure that might requires a few readings in order to grasp the idea. Discussion on various functional groups (alkenes, alkynes, nitriles, ketones, enol, carboxylic acids, carboxylic derivatives) are very detailed and problems focus on multistep organic synthesis.
Information on spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, etc) might not be comparable to a text that devotes to these spectroscopy topics, but students will learn the gist and essence of using these techniques in determining organic structures.
What makes this text distinguish itself from others are the chapters on hetero atoms like phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. Lots of Molecular Orbitals

This includes a lot of the physics behind organic chemistry. Streitweiser did a lot of pioneering work in the 50s calculating molecular orbitals so that aspect is very nicely covered. He discovered a lot of what is presented so it gives the book a sense of authority.
The writing has an appealing friendliness to it, like an older relative is taking you under their wing as an apprentice. Their are a few reminisences, such as the time they distilled an explosive peroxide and the resultant explosion moved furniture in nearby rooms it shook the building so much.

The book assumed mastery over general chemistry and the prerequisites of chemical structure and bonding. About the Author
The husband and wife team Nancy and Randall Faber are internationally known as authors of the Piano Adventures teaching method and over two hundred publications for the piano. They recently founded the Faber Piano Institute in Ann Arbor, MI, where they live with their daughter Vivian. Nancy Faber, who was named "Distinguished Composer of the Year" by the Music Teachers National Association, enjoys a busy schedule of commissions for the concert stage in addition to her educational composing. Recent commissions include "The Snow Queen" for narrator and orchestra, "The Picture My Imagination Has Painted" for Flute Quartet and Piano, and "Trio for Flute, Saxophone and Piano". Her pieces have been heard on U.S. public radio and network television. She studied composition with Joan Tower, William Albright, and British composer Nicholas Maw; piano studies were at the Eastman School and Michigan State University. Randall Faber has toured Korea, Taiwan, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was master teacher for both the World Conference on Piano Pedagogy and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. He gave recitals in St. Louis, Ann Arbor, as Convention Artist for the North Dakota Music Teachers, and performed as Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan, University of Southern Mississippi, Saginaw State University, and numerous universities throughout South Korea. He was featured clinician for the Nebraska Music Teachers, the Florida Music Teachers and the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Convention, and recently presented his research at the 9th International Conference on Motivation in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Faber holds three degrees from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. The Fabers advocate piano study not only for personal expression and performance success, but also as a vehicle for the student's creative and cognitive development. Their philosophy is reflected in their writing, their public appearances, and in their own tea

My favorite piano method

I have been teaching piano lessons for 13 years and highly recommend the Piano Adventures series. I have used several different method books, including Alfred, Bastien, and David Carr Glover. As a piano student, I learned music on the David Carr Glover method, and that was initially my first choice when I started teaching. I actually tried Piano Adventures last of all the methods, but when I finally did, it immediately became my favorite method.

Areas where Piano Adventures excels above other methods:

*APPROACH TO NOTE READING: As every teacher knows, some beginning piano students are ready to start reading notes from the staff on their first lesson, and others need it to be broken down in a very slow, step-by-step approach. The Piano Adventures method offers this breakdown in a comprehensive, thorough way. It not only moves slowly enough for the students who struggle the most, it also teaches the notes independent of finger number, which saves the teacher from having to break a bad habit later. (Notes on the staff are introduced about halfway through the primer level book.) Even for students who can learn the staff right away, the preliminary material is so valuable that I usually choose not to skip it with them.

*TECHNIQUE: The tips and technique helps in the Piano Adventures books are not only solid and necessary, they are easily understandable and easy to implement. The authors use word pictures, diagrams, and explanations in a very effective way. This not only helps students to use better technique, it also makes you a better teacher of good technique.

*MUSIC: The songs in Piano Adventures are more fun to play! They sound better. Students like them more. The duet parts are more satisfying and interesting to the teacher. True musicality is encouraged right from the very beginning, so that children learn to play artistically, not mechanically.

*APPROACH TO MUSICAL CONCEPTS OTHER THAN NOTES: Bar lines are not introduced in the first few pieces, which helps to avoid the common mistake students make of viewing them as stop signs. Time signatures, dynamics, and other concepts (such as staccato and legato) are introduced step by step, but not too early, so that children can develop a solid grasp of playing each one before moving on to the next. Sight reading is built right into the curriculum. Ear training is offered in the Theory books. These two skills are essential for all musicians to develop, but all too often, it is easy to overlook them in the busyness of the lesson. Since they are right there in the book (no need to purchase separate sight reading and ear training books), it saves cost and incorporates naturally into the student's skill set.

*UNIVERSAL APPEAL: Before trying Piano Adventures, I would have a first lesson without books, and then determine which method to use based on what I evaluated in the student's learning style. For quicker learners, I would choose Glover, for slower learners I would choose Alfred. (After using Bastien for one or two students, I just plain didn't like it at all.) However, with Piano Adventures, I have a method that I can trust to work with practically any student of any skill level.

All in all, I truly think that the Piano Adventures books result in students who play better, practice more successfully each week between lessons, and enjoy the instrument more. Fantastic job, Faber & Faber!

First piano books

My son took his first lessons from this series of books (4 in all, Technique - Primer - Lesson - Theory), and now although he's not very old himself, he still teaches from these books (newer editions are out since he used them as a new student).

They are easy to follow and teach from. You could potentially even teach yourself piano using these. These "purple" level books are great for the beginning student. Make sure you get all 4 though.

I love how clearly the lessons are laid out

We bought this at the recommendation of my son's piano teacher. I love how clearly the lessons are laid out. My son has been able to look ahead in the book and learn on his own, too, which is fun and exciting for him. The songs are great and I especially love it when my son and his teacher get to play a duet and he can hear how his simple part will get to be part of something bigger and more complicated in the future.
