The River of Grass acquisition is a proposed land acquisition by the State of Florida, which has the potential to affect the implementation of CERP. The proposal is to purchase tracts of land south of Lake Okeechobee from the U.S. Sugar Corporation. The state argues that the purchase would reduce phosphorus loads and help restore the historic north-south flow of water from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades. Initially, acquisition of 187,000 acres was announced by Florida Governor Charlie Crist and subsequently approved by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in December 2008. Since then, the original proposal has been downsized on multiple occasions, both in terms of the size of the purchase and the purchase price. Most recently, a revised land purchase agreement was announced and approved by the SFWMD in August 2010. SFWMD now proposes a direct cash purchase of 26,800 acres, or approximately 14% of the original purchase proposed by the governor in 2008. The purchase would cost SFWMD $197 million.

Questions have been raised regarding the proposed acquisition. Some of these questions center on potential positive and negative consequences of the land purchase agreement. These include the effectiveness of the land acquisition in reducing nutrient loads that are detrimental to the Everglades and in restoring historic flows, as well as the effect of the initiative’s funding requirements on Florida’s other restoration projects, including projects with a non-federal cost share requirement under CERP. Since state funding for CERP activities is expected to decline in the coming years, some have questioned whether the proposed funding for the land acquisition deal might be better spent on CERP projects.

The impact of the land acquisition on CERP and other Everglades restoration projects will depend in part on budgetary decisions to be made by the state in late September 2010, which could potentially reduce or delay state funding for some CERP projects. Near-term delays resulting from any funding reductions for CERP projects may be of interest to Congress, as they would affect the overall federal effort to restore the Everglades ecosystem under CERP.

In this volume, Guity Nashat traces the evolution of the role of women in Middle Eastern societies from ancient times through the seventeenth century. She employs a rational choice theoretical framework, examining the interplay between local practices and early Islamic beliefs and institutions. Nashat follows the expansion of Islam throughout the area and further examines the subsequent development of the foundations of Islamic law and practice with regard to women. Judith E Tucker surveys women and gender issues in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Middle East, with particular focus on economic activity, assess to political power, and contributions to cultural life. Her essay also addresses the role that Islam and indigenous custom are thought to play in shaping women's lives.

About the Author

Guity Nashat is professor of Middle Eastern history at the University of
Illinois at Chicago. She has published The Beginnings of Modern Reform in
Iran and edited Women and Revolution in Iran.

Judith E. Tucker is professor of history at Georgetown University. She
authored Women in Nineteenth-Century Egypt and In the House of the Law:
Gender and Islamic Law in Ottoman Syria and Palestine and co-edited Arab
Women: Old Boundaries, New Frontiers.

I'm so bad at drawing but I can color! So this coloring book is perfect for me. Every page is filled with such chic illustrations - it's even great if you want to just outline to drawings to kind of learn how to sketch! I'm 30 and I totally enjoy this coloring book- i bought two so I could also give one to my niece. It's the perfect gift for a child or adult! If you have a daughter or niece, think of this as the perfect "mommy and me" activity! Highly recommend this stylish activity.

Love this coloring book. Love that it's different from a lot of the adult coloring books out there. Love that it's one sided and allows me to color with pencils and markers. I would definitely recommend this coloring books to anyone who colors to relieve stress or just for fun.

About the Author
Author K-Rahn Vallatine was once a wayward youth himself. After a series of wake up calls, he made a decision to be committed to both the betterment of himself mentally and spiritually and to those in the community around him. He works on the frontlines mentoring and assisting both “at-risk” and what he calls “beyond risk” (those who are currently or formerly incarcerated) youth. Throughout the years, K-Rahn has made waves as an underground Hip Hop artist, has previously served as a school teacher, teaching in both the private and public school systems, has sat on the Board of Directors of a charter school, has years of experience working in Los Angeles’ juvenile halls and juvenile detention camps, and has stood as a keynote speaker for conferences, youth empowerment events and webinars. He has recently written a Hip Hop Life Skills curriculum, entitled Live Above The Hype. This curriculum analyzes Hip Hop culture to promote character development & pro-social values, merging social-emotional skills with cognitive learning. K-Rahn merges his entertainment talents and resources with his background in education and juvenile justice.
