It is wonderful to have some current documentation of the importance of the arts in people's lives. During this
time of high pressure testing, it is comforting to be aware that there is a view to what has really made our country progressive. The creative minds of Edison, Ford, Kamen, Gates, Jobs, etc. could never be summed up with rote test scores. Here's a good test question, "What other country has been the home of as many creative
minds as the U.S.?"

Inspring must-read for teachers, artists, administration and parents

As an arts administrator and artist, I found this thought-provoking book to be inspiring and insightful. It is a must-read for anyone trying to make the case for securing arts funding in public education or non-profit arts facilities. It intelligently answers the question, 'why fund the arts?'. Hoffmann-Davis writes in plain text, making a strong case for the importance of arts education in day-to-day learning. She goes beyond trying to quantify what the arts can do in the classroom to articulating the case for creative thinking's effect on our quality of life and it's ability to better society. Excellent, excellent book! Will be recommending this to all of my artist friends and the art instructors I work with!

Peril, founder of the zine Mystery Date, devoted to her obsession with old etiquette and self-help books, analyzes these and other marvels in her first book. "Pink think" is "a set of ideas and attitudes about what constitutes proper female behavior," she says, and it "assumes there is a standard of behavior to which all women... must aspire." In casual, friendly language, Peril who shares tales of her own childhood pink think rebellion charts the amusing yet sad history of how women have been conditioned with a set of rules that often begins with someone telling them little girls are made of "sugar and spice and everything nice." A pop culture history of achieving the feminine ideal, the book explores everything from childhood and adolescence to marriage and the workplace. Spurred on by the "Patron Saint of Pink Think," Jayne Mansfield, pink think infiltrated frighteningly numerous aspects of women's lives from the 1940s through the '70s and was often driven by advertisements pitching girls' versions of house-cleaning supplies and feminine hygiene products that counseled women to douche regularly in order to ensure a happy marriage. In an afterword, Peril expresses her dismay at the apparent preservation of pink think today (witness the success of 1995's The Rules and 2001's The Surrendered Wife). Are phone message pads PINK?

I LOVE this book. I have been waiting 2 years and it is not LONG enough. I almost had apoplexy last night from laughing so hard while reading it! This book is very good in the genre of Nature Abhors a Vacuum: A Handbook for the Domestically Impaired, Kiss My Tiara and Southern Ladies and Gentlemen. Thanks for getting it into print (FINALLY) W.W. NORTON. When is the next book?
P.S. I am SOOOOOOO happy it was delivered on September 30th! You will have to read the book to realize the significance!

The Pink Jello Mold of Femininity

This book is genius! It walks a fine line between rationally exploring the history of social expectations for girls and reporting the horror contained within, without ever giving into the temptation to go on one long, humorless feminist rant. In fact, it approaches the topic with remarkable good humor. Well written, informative AND funny!

Essential for the thinking woman

A fascinating read. The author has a bit of a hobby in collecting examples of 'Pink Think,' or, paraphernalia which encourages women to do groom themselves to be appropriately girly to fulfill their potential (i.e., how girls were brainwashed for decades that their only goals in life should be to snag a husband and to find their true happiness in motherhood).
It's enraging and yet at the same time strangely intriguing to read about books, magazines, advertisements, games, television shows, movies and more were so often geared toward steering a woman to be a certain way.
Strange details include how women were encouraged to be 'fresh' from douching with disinfectants to childhood games where the goal was to get the perfect date to how a woman only achieves true sexual satisfaction after she had fulfilled her destiny of marrying and having children. On top of that it details how girls were encouraged to always dumb themselves down in front of men to flatter their egos, and the author even provides quizzes published decades ago in magazines to test girlishness or career woman potential.
Any modern independent woman will be both shocked, amused, angered and more than likely grateful that so much progress has been made (even though we're still encouraged in many ways to continue to 'think pink'). I tried to convince myself of the usefulness of this book. It may be that my son is just too young for me to take any of these practices and put them into action. He's only one. I was able to take things for myself from the book, but mostly just the repetitions that are written in Chopra's 7 Spiritual Laws for Success.

I love the teachings of this book. It has shared how to nurture each of my children's spirits to help them be the best person they can possibly become. I have be given insight on how to help them be open to new experiences, not limit the opportunities with closed-minded thoughts and enjoy being their own unique spirits.

A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore (or, simply, the Baltimore Catechism) was the de facto standard Catholic school text in the United States from 1885 to the late 1960s. It was the first such catechism written for Catholics in North America, replacing a translation of Bellarmine's Small Catechism. In response to criticisms, various editions include annotations or other modifications. The Baltimore Catechism remained in use in nearly all Catholic schools until many moved away from catechism-based education, though it is still used up to this day in some. In the nineteenth century, repeated efforts had been made in the United States towards an arrangement by which a uniform textbook of Christian Doctrine might be used by all Catholics. As early as 1829, the bishops assembled in the First Provincial Council of Baltimore, Maryland decreed: "A catechism shall be written which is better adapted to the circumstances of this Province; it shall give the Christian Doctrine as explained in Cardinal Bellarmine's Catechism (1597), and when approved by the Holy See, it shall be published for the common use of Catholics" (Decr. xxxiii). The clause recommending Bellarmine's Catechism as a model was added at the special request of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. It may be mentioned here that Bellarmine's "Small Catechism," Italian text with English translation, was published at Boston, in 1853. The wish of the bishops was not carried out, and the First and Second Plenary Councils of Baltimore (1852 and 1866) repeated the decree of 1829. In the Third Plenary Council (1884) many bishops were in favor of a "revised" edition of a 1775 catechism by Irish Archbishop Butler, but finally the matter was given into the hands of a committee of six bishops. At last, in 1885, was issued "A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore." Although the council had desired a catechism "perfect in every respect" (Acta et Decr., p. 219), theologians and teachers criticized several points (Nilles, "Commentaria", II, 265, 188). Soon various editions came forth with additions of word-meanings, explanatory notes, some even with different Arrangements, so that soon there was a considerable diversity in the books that go by the name of Baltimore Catechism. This text is an introduction to the theory and practice involved in the design and management of technically oriented projects. It is a merger of our personal experiences as designers, engineers, and technical managers of projects whose values have ranged from several thousand to a few million dollars. We have assumed that you are

• A student studying science, engineering, or technology
• Interested in the planning, performing, and monitoring of projects
• Expecting to become involved in projects that will grow in size and complexity

Other texts discuss project design and technical management. However, many of these texts are theory oriented and lack practical examples. (Texts that we feel would be useful to you as references are noted in the bibliography.) We have tried to achieve a balance between theory and practice by including a major case study that is introduced in chapter 1 and continues through chapter 5.

Our years of experience have taught us that the best theoretical knowledge is of little value until you apply it to practical problems. These problems include

• Estimating costs and schedules accurately at the beginning of a project
• Determining and fulfilling the expectations of the client
• Imparting theoretical and practical knowledge to new employees
• Guiding diverse groups of people toward a common goal
• Earning a profit so other projects can be pursued
• Enjoying the work as it progresses

What is the value of life experiences if they do not include (1) learning, (2) having fun while learning, and (3) earning the trust and respect of your superiors, fellow employees, subcontractors, and clients? Not much, we say!

The philosophical basis of this book is the systematic approach to project design and management. This approach requires continually considering and reevaluating how each portion of a project interacts with the entire project. Its use can lead to an efficient, useful, and cost-effective product, process, or service.

A typical project using the systematic approach consists of four phases:

The Conception Phase, in which ideas are devised and brainstormed 2.

The Study Phase, in which potential designs are investigated

The Design Phase, in which the system is actually designed in detail

The Implementation Phase, in which the system is constructed and delivered

The four phases of the systematic approach:

• develop ideas
• investigate design options
• design product
• construct product

These phases may overlap. However, for discussion purposes, we consider them to be separate in time and cover them in separate chapters.

Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 each deal with one of these phases. The four chapters have the same organizational structure, with the following sections:

Purpose and goal of the phase

Activities occurring during the phase

Documentation for the phase

Defining the completion of the phase

Exercises

The example we use for the major case study is the result of our experiences in working with local business, industry, government agencies, and charitable foundations. In this example, Northeastern University engineering and technology students become involved in a community project in the town of Bedford, Massachusetts. The names of students used in the case study are fictitious.

Chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9 are specialty chapters. They describe our approach to systematic; management, documentation, documentation interaction, and modeling. These chapters are am introduction to topics that may be of value to you in later years.

Colleges and universities using this book may need to adapt the sequence in which information is presented so that it dovetails with a variety of courses. The topics covered in the appendixes allow for the flexibility in presentation. The topics are

• Appendix C: Specification for the Town of Bedford: "An Activity Center".

Note that appendixes C, D, E, and H relate specifically to the major case study, the activity center for the town of Bedford.

Excellent Book for Project Engineering

There is a lot of information packed in this book. It is dense but contains a lot of the practical and technical techniques that are used to create, control, and implement projects especially in an industrial environment. I would recommend this book to those wanting to pursue project management as a direction for their career.
