Good textbook

I like this textbook a lot even though it's a textbook. It uses a lot of sample trials to further explain and clarify points of interest. My one dislike about the book is the treatment of vocabulary. There are some words that are in bold in the text, but they are not included in the glossary. Some words aren't defined directly in the text even though they are in bold, but they are included in the glossary; and some words that seem very important are only in italics. However, overall I think it does a really good job of making this information as clear and easy to understand as possible and I really like the example cases. The questions at the end of the chapters are also very useful and can help review the main points of the chapter.

I hate reading textbooks as much as the next college guy, but this book is good enough to make it somewhat bearable.
The cases help explain things and it is written in plain English which makes it easy to understand.

This is an interesting book. There is a lot of information in it. It would be a great book to purchase if you are planning on studying law. Since I am not a law student, I am glad that I rented the book, as I probably won't use it again after this semester is over.

Joseph E. Lowndes is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Oregon. He is author of From the New Deal to the New Right: Race and the Southern Origins of Modern Conservatism.

Julie Novkov is Associate Professor of Political Science and Women’s Studies at the University at Albany, SUNY. She is the author of Constituting Workers, Protecting Women and Racial Union, and a co-editor with B�rbara Sutton and Sandra Morgen of Security Disarmed.

Dorian T. Warren is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is also a Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Research in African-American Studies and a Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy.

An acceptable standard resource on Isaiah

This three volume commentary series is fine, but it is not that insightful. It is workmanlike and reliable. I was obliged to use it at seminary while having access to some fifteen other commentaries. I would highly recommend Brevard Childs's and Motyer's commentaries on Isaiah over this 3 volume set, but this is still something of a standard resource for more traditional conservative Protestants who veer towards an amillennial eschatology and interpretation of the Old Testament. If you do not appreciate historic pre-millennialism or dispensationalism you will prefer Young's interpretation of the eschatological passages in Isaiah that have been traditionally interpeted by most Chrisitians since Augustine as referring to the Church age, rather than as literal future promises to the people of Israel of Isaiah's time.

Young has done a fabulous job teaching the book of Isaiah in print. His thorough exegesis and commentary are very readable and helpful. As a pastor preaching through the book of Isaiah this continues to be one of the top commentaries I turn to in my study. Combined with J. Alec Motyer's book (The Prophecy of Isaiah: An Introduction and Commentary) you will get an even more thorough understanding. These men have both done a great job and agree almost completely. As much as they agree though, they have different styles and illustrations. I have been using these commentaries for about a year now.

Edward J. Young on Isaiah

The hardcover 3 volume set seems to be out of print! Hopefully it will be reprinted in a nice hardcover edition. Until then --thankfully-- it is STILL available in this 3 volume softcover edition.
As earlier mentioned Young is a member of a vanishing breed of Biblical commentators, he is conservative. His exposition rests upon a firm conviction that the text is holy and is God-breathed. Isaiah is the sole human author, and according to Young it is not a compilation of the efforts of various editors.
He avoids injecting many of the popular and wild theories popular today, instead he sticks to the text and the facts as presented in the Biblical context, supplemented with some archaeological data. Hence the reader stands upon revealed facts, not contrived theories. Young moves along verse by verse, adding wonderful illumination and clarity when needed.
One proof that we have a very stable copy of Isaiah is the Qumran scroll from the 2nd century BC, with a text 99.5 percent identical to today's Hebrew edition.
As a commentary, it is one of the best. It is HIGHLY recommended for every believer. Most of the Hebrew words are transliterated, but not all. The text is very readable, and useful for beginners or experts in Biblical studies.
At the end of each volume is an index of persons, authors cited, and passages cited. The books are beautifully printed and well laid out. Isaiah is a worthy book to study, and this is the best commentary available for any believer.

David Gallop is Professor of Philosophy (Emeritus) at Trent University, Ontario. He taught philosophy at the University of Toronto and at Trent University. The Cooper-Grube edition is better

Waterfield was wise to substitute the phrase "Defence of Socrates" for "Apology". The original Greek word is apologia -- meaning 'self-defense' or 'vindication' -- from which we derive the English word "apology". However, it is misleading to call the work "The Apology" for English readers because Socrates doesn't apologize for anything in the monologue/dialogue! Indeed, it is Socrates at his brashest, defending his way of life with every breath he can muster. However, as with his Oxford translation of Plato's "Republic", Waterfield's explanatory notes do little to aid the reader in understanding the text. Those clarifying factual obscurities are almost invariably apposite and informative, but those of a critical and philosophical kind are, for reasons of compass, bound to be rather dogmatic. One must then ask, What was the purpose of producing this translation?

Good for beginners.

For teachers looking for something between a comprehensive collection of the dialogues and a photocopied hand-out, this little edition nicely fits the bill. It's an extremely user-friendly translation with a generous introduction and copious but clear and concise endnotes. The editor admittedly errs on the side of verbosity in the introduction, going to excessive (not to mention gratuitous) lengths to argue that the "Crito" is not inconsistent with the "Apology." Also, rather than substituting "defense" for "apology" and " goodness" for "virtue," he might have accomplished the goal of a clear and accessible edition by giving the reader a bit more credit. Finally, many instructors and readers would understandably be forgiven if they shunned this edition because of its omission of the "Phaedo," the final chapter in the trial, sentencing, and punishment of Socrates.

What is holiness, the mission of Socrates, and accepting the laws

These three dialogues together with the Phaedo cover the trial of Socrates. Of the three dialogues in this volume, the Euthyphro is the most abstract, and is the only one of that matters for the metaphysics of Plato, and is an extreme example of Socratic irony (e.g., if Euthyphro is an expert on religion then Meletus should indict Euthyphro for corrupting Socrates). In this dialogue Socrates tries to sort out a precise definition of what "the holy" is. He also talks about something like causation: "it is not because it is in a state of 'being loved' that an object is loved by those who love it; rather, it is in that state because it is loved by them."

The Defence of Socrates (the Apology) is an explanation of why Socrates thought his mission of questioning people who claimed to know things important and worth dying for: "are you not ashamed that, while you take care to acquire as much wealth as possible, with honour and glory as well, yet you take no care or thought for understanding or truth, or for the best possible state of your soul?" I can't think of anything that would better settle the mind of a thinking person who believes themself to be doing something right and is being punished for it. Socrates is more serene and has more to say than Jesus does in his trial and execution: Socrates never breaks down like in Mark 15:34 and he does not merely say "they don't know what they are doing" like in Luke 23:34 but explains why it is better to suffer evil than do it and that evil is done out of ignorance.

The Crito is probably the most interesting of these three dialogues for students of law; although the Defence is in a court, Socrates is not seriously trying to win the vote but is explaining himself. In the Crito, Socrates argues to Crito why one should follow unjust laws as long as they do not demand that one do evil.

ATTENTION SOCCER MOMS!

My four-year-old son loves all of the Froggy books! And when he signed up to play soccer, we read this book every night for the entire season. He chants "Head it, boot it, knee it, shoot it . . . " before every game or practice. We are now buying a copy for the team to autograph and give to the coach. Every soccer mom should get this book! (As well as the other Froggy books!)

He's back! A really fun and exciting book for soccer fans...Froggy and his gang of friends are good sports, and have a lot of fun while becoming champions of good attitude, and their league. A great book for parents too, it highlights the fun that should be team competition...and, of course, it's very funny...
