About the Author
Peter Cotton was born and raised in England, where his father was a country doctor. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London, graduating in 1963. He decided to specialize in gastroenterology in 1967, coming under the influence of Dr Brian Creamer in the St Thomas’ “gut hut”. At around that time, a revolution started in gastroenterology, with the introduction of the first fully flexible endoscopes (“Fibrescopes”), instruments for seeing inside the digestive tract .Hence the name of the book “The tunnel at the end of the light”. Brian encouraged Peter to get involved and a career was born. He rapidly embraced the evolving technology, which soon blossomed into useful therapeutics. It became possible to do treatments through the mouth (and anus) for conditions such as bleeding, stone and polyps that previously required open surgery which was then both painful and dangerous. Peter became one of the leading proponents, researchers and teachers in the field, based at The Middlesex Hospital in London, where he trained many future national leaders. Frustrations with inadequate resources eventually led him to move to USA in 1986, to Duke University in North Carolina, where he set up a state of the art endoscopy and teaching facility. In 1994 he moved to Charleston to initiate and direct a multi-disciplinary Digestive Disease Center at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he remains today. His main clinical focus throughout has been in pancreatic and biliary diseases, and the use of the technique called endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (which he named, and is now thankfully known as ERCP). His pre-eminence in that field has attracted hundreds of trainees from around the world, and invitations to teach and demonstrate in more than 50 countries. Dr Cotton is now working part-time, much enjoying his home and the community on Dewees Island, SC, and his wonderful family, which now includes 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A true biography of modern gastroenterology!!

Peter Cotton is a master endoscopist and a pioneer in the field. His enthusiasm for endoscopic procedures particularly for ERCP in contagious. Due to his frequent travel to all parts of the world he is responsible for the increase in the popular awareness and importance of the gastroenterologist-endoscopist in modern medicine.He wrote the first textbook of endoscopic procedures now in its 6th edition. During his tenure in the UK and US he was the mentor of scores of endoscopists improving the quality of endoscopy units around the world .
The present book is a witty professional autobiography allowing the reader to travel with him to the endoscopy units of remote countries. The reader also will appreciate the technical evolution of the specialty from primitive fiberoptics in small rooms in the basement (for some reason always close to radiology services..)of the hospitals to the modern facilities in the Mayo or Cleveland Clinics. I recommend this book to all persons with an interest in gastroenterology and particularly to students, residents or fellows willing to have an insight in in the life of a true master-endoscopist.

About the Author

Scott Watson is a veteran music teacher, a frequently published and commissioned composer, and a highly regarded music education technology specialist. In addition to 20 years of experience in teaching K-12 instrumental and classroom music in the Parkland School District (Allentown, Pennsylvania), Watson serves as adjunct instructor at University of the Arts and Cairn University (both in the Philadelphia area) and Central Connecticut State University (New Britain, CT), and has delivered numerous workshops and clinics to in-service music teachers.

Excellent Text for Integration of Technology in Music Education

Using Technology to Unlock Musical Creativity is an incredible asset for music educators. I use this text in my Integration of Technology in Music Education course at The University of the Arts. It provides a unique and compelling perspective into WHY and HOW technology is an integral component of creative and expressive lenses of learning through music for all students. Beyond the 8 Principles, which are a thoughtful foundation to the WHY of using technology, seemingly an outgrowth of Dr. Watson's extensive professional and educational career as musician-composer-educator, the second half of the book puts these ideals into action (the HOW), supported by actual student samples available through an Oxford University Press link. The story is well told in the astronauts' own words and through interviews with their wives and children. The sections covering selected events and personages of the Cold War and the 1960s provide a unique perspective; the role of religion in the astronauts' lives is an important theme not found elsewhere. The year 1968 is memorable for any number of reasons, science writer Zimmerman reminds us, not the least of which was the historic flight of Apollo 8, the first manned space flight to slip out of Earth's gravitational tethers. Apollo 8, with Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders aboard, blasted off in late December of 1968, its intention to journey beyond Earth's orbit, slip into a lunar orbit, then escape again, and return. Its success was a momentous occasionthe frontiers of space had been effectively pushed out, way outalthough it was overshadowed six months later by the actual lunar landing. Zimmerman, a science and technology writer who has contributed to American Heritage, the Sciences, and other publications, has chosen two aspects of the Apollo 8 mission to emphasize. First, he depicts a space program then still the venue of the hero/ace pilot who, sacrificing family priorities and personal safety, was the Cold Warrior nonpareil. In relating this, Zimmerman situates the flight within the context of that electrifying and appalling yearthe Tet Offensive, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, student uprisings, the Chicago Democratic convention, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedywhen more than a spacecraft appeared to be spinning out of orbit. Zimmerman keeps in check this potentially hyperbolic drama, giving it a nice steady rhythm, but he loses that touch when he goes after his second theme, attempting to infuse the event with righteousness. It showed the world, Zimmerman claims, an ``American vision of moral individuality, religious tolerance and mutual respect,'' though its difficult to see the space race as an expression of such respect or to decipher the meaning of ``moral individuality'' in this context. Zimmerman does realize that perhaps the most lasting achievement of Apollo 8 is a photograph of Earthrise over the Moon. A wonderful story, poorly told.

What an adventure was Apollo 8!
In many ways, the first manned translunar voyage surpassed Apollo 11 and represented the greatest single leap forward in the US space programme.
Sadly, Zimmerman falls far short of doing the mission justice. Only half the book seems solely devoted to it; the remainder is filled with a potted history of the Cold War and uninteresting insights into the religous lives of the three protagonists.
The former has been done much, much better elsewhere; the latter served no purpose.
In the author's defence, ommitting these two aspects of the book would have left it weighing in somewhere around 150 pages (and no, I haven't counted) which possibly explains their inclusion - it's not a long book. Add a peppering of typos and errors of fact and grammar and you have a book that only the most ardent Apollo fan would list as a must-have.

An important story, but I was disappointed.

I thought the book a decent retelling of the Apollo 8 mission, but I was hoping for more. I would have liked to know more of the mission itself: techical details, life in space, etc. I think setting the flight in the context of the sixties was a good idea but some of the "detours" are too long, for example, student protests at Columbia University receive more attention than the Apollo 1 fire. I also did not like the polemic at the end.

Genesis is a very well written account of the historic flight of Apollo 8. The text is concise and the story is well paced. The only real detraction from an otherwise great account,is the author's seeming need to infuse his own political views, as is very evident in the final chapter.

About the Author

F. Chris Garcia is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of New Mexico.� He is the author/editor of several books and many articles and chapters in the areas of Hispanic politics, public opinion and political socialization, campaigns and elections and New Mexico government. Professor Garcia has taught classes in these areas for over 35 years. Included among these were newly instituted courses in Chicano Politics and the Politics of Ethnic Groups in the early 1970s.� He has served as an officer of several professional organizations as well as serving as a college Dean, Academic Vice President, Provost and President at the University of New Mexico. During this period Dr. Garcia has provided extensive commentary and analysis of campaigns and elections for local, national and international media. He is the recipient of many honors and awards including the APSA Award for Distinguished Service, the NM Governor’s Distinguished Public Service Award and the UNM Regents Meritorious Service Medal.

Gabriel Sanchez is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. His fields of interest are Racial and Ethnic politics with a specific focus on Latino Political Behavior. Professor Sanchez has articles published in Political Research Quarterly and American Politics Research. He teaches classes in the areas of racial and ethnic politics, Hispanic politics, and Public Opinion and Electoral Behavior.� Professor Sanchez is also the Recruitment Coordinator for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Research Center for Health Policy at the University of New Mexico.

About the Author

About the authors:
Rainer Metzger studied art history, history and German studies in Munich and Augsburg. He received his doctorate in 1994, and has worked as a fine arts journalist for the Viennese newspaper Der Standard. He has written numerous books on art, including volumes on van Gogh and Chagall.

Ingo F. Walther (1940-2007) was born in Berlin and studied medieval studies, literature, and art history in Frankfurt am Main and Munich. He has published numerous books on the art of the Middle Ages and of the 19th and 20th centuries. Walther's many titles for TASCHEN include Picasso, Art of the 20th Century, and Codices Illustres

A Must Have for all Van Gogh Fans out there!

First off, I must point out that I did not read the English version of this, but the French one; since it's a translation, it should basically be the same.

Taschen has the nice habit of making great books for comparatively very cheap prices; and that is once again the case with this collection of all Van Gogh paintings. The paper is top quality (glazed is it? I forget how it's called, but it's the same as you find in every other taschen publication) and the size of the book ensures a good view on the paintings.

I had read 2 books relating Vincent's life, so when it came to read another text on him and his work, I already knew most of of the bulk of that artist's life; however, this wasn't redundant at all. The authors have interesting things to say and usually do so in ways that won't kill you with boredom (even if I sometimes don't agree with the theories proposed). Substantial citations from Van Gogh's letters are used there, which is good, since Vincent wrote a lot. The book does a good work of setting Vincent Van Gogh in context, letting us know what authors he read, and what kind of human being he was. And Vincent was a particularly wonderful human being in my opinion, something this book does not fail to show.

Now as to the pictures of the paintings, what can I say? If you like Van Gogh's art, you'll like them. And even though you may not like everything he's ever done, it's worthwhile to have the whole thing to see the evolution of his art from a very dark and gloomy universe to a violently colourful one.

I definitely recommend this book for everyone interested in knowing more about Van Gogh than the basics. The book is a beautiful object as well, pretty heavy, but very classy.

My favorite painter is presented in this book as a mysterious man he used to be. You will get the best explanations of his work, every painting description and the story about its creation. Love Van Gogh and i was very pleased with this book.

A VERY NICE SET...

All things considered, this is a very nice set: two volumes, in a nice box, printed in Italy, featuring virtually all Van Gogh's paintings in color.

The reproductions are not glossy, but the photography is so clear that one can see the paint textures and even the canvas under the paint. Someone has noted that the colors are somewhat "off," but we must hasten to add that one wouldn't know it at all unless there were another color reproduction with which to compare. So, all in all, the reproductions are quite good. The monochrome photos represent paintings destroyed in WW2, or those which were denyied full color reproduction by the owners.

Can hardly go wrong with this set.
