Another enjoyable read

In the second book of the Perceivers series 'Mind Secrets' by Jane Killick, two years has now passed. Michael having regained his perception is now part of a small group of perceivers chosen to work with the government. His new job is to work with the police looking into the minds of suspects during interrogations. During the investigation of a teenager strapped with explosives, Michael notices something strange. The would be bomber's mind is blank, with exception to step by step instructions, leading Michael to believe he's been programmed by another perceiver. Going undercover to investigate, Michael uncovers a much larger conspiracy that threatens both perceivers and normals alike.
While I was mildly disappointed to no longer have the characters of the first book that I became attached to, the new characters were a great addition. As an added bonus, we do get to visit the characters of Dr. Page and Brian Ransom. Michael grows more as a character himself, both in personality and in his perception, as he (and we) learn there may just be more to perception than originally thought. Speaking of characters, my favorite may just have been the villain. S/he was so well thought out and just flat out eerily creepy.
The storyline was engaging with multiple arcs and a few unsuspecting twists. The few first few chapters jumped right into the action but then did slow down a bit as it laid the ground work for things to come. I'll admit I was not as engaged initially as I was the first book during this ground work period. Never fear though, half way through, the action speeds up, the arc's start tying in, and you have a thrill ride for the remainder of the book. Overall, an engaging read that could almost be another stand alone had it more back story information in the beginning. A story that can be enjoyed by both young adult and older readers alike.
