Insightful and Entertaining

This one volume History of Philosophy is an exceptional one, as it presents the main philosophical positions of the most influential philosophers starting from the first, Thales. If someone read through this book 3 or 4 times, he would certainly have a good grasp of what philosophy is all about. The conciseness of his writing style and his arrangement of ideas is remarkable. For anyone who wants to begin the study of philosophy should most definitely start here, as Gordon Clark does an admirable job of making the main ideas simple to the reader. Trying to read the primary sources of each philosopher presented in this book would certainly not be the best use of your time, as they normally ramble on about unimportant matters too often. Clark, on the contrary, targets the main points of each philosopher and puts them in words that are more intelligible than that of the main writers themselves.

If you are interested in philosophy, you absolutely must have this compact one volume history. During Clark's days, this book was a best seller in christian and secular institutions and was highly praised by all sorts of philosophers.

I would particularly recommend it to christian pastors who have not studied any philosophy because knowing the most influential ideas of the last 2500 years is a must for anyone who wants to have an impact today in the pulpit.

Highly recommend this masterpiece.

A Great Introduction

I found this book while browsing through the school library and, after remembering an awesome quote which was taken from it, I decided to check it out. Now, having read the book, I would like to recommend it to anyone wanting to study the history of philosophy.
The reason why is two-fold. First of all, the author has a skill rarely equalled in explaining the ideas of the major thinkers on a level the beginning student can understand. Secondly, he shows the errors that each philosopher makes only when it matters--and he does so eloquently.
As proof of the first, consider this quote (the one that I heard once and thankfully remembered) which is excerpted from the section dealing with Heraclitus:
"From a promontory above a mighty river as it flows down a valley, the river between a frame of trees seems to stand still as in a picture. We know that it moves, but we cannot see its motion. Sensation is too feeble and clumsy to see things as they are, and hence common opinion holds that some things do not move. On the contrary, all things flow. No man can ever step twice into the same river. How could he? The second time he tried to step, new waters would have flowed down from upstream: the water would not be the same. Neither would the bed and banks be the same, for the constant erosion would have changed them too. And if the river is the water, the bed, and the banks, the river is not the same river. Strictly speaking, there is no river. When common opinion names a river, it supposes that the name applies to something that will remain there for a time at least; but the river remains there no time at all. It has changed while you pronounce its name. There is no river. Worse yet, you cannot step into the same river twice because _you_ are not there twice. You too change, and the person who stepped the first time no longer exists to step the second time. A person is also a river, a stream of consciousness, as William James called it; and the stream of consciousness never has the same contents, the same bed or banks. Persons do not exist."
Wasn't that grand? I myself have never heard a more forceful (nor a more memorable) argument for the idea of a Heraclitean flux than that. But my second statement beckons for an example of its validity as well. And so, here is the author skillfully pointing out an error in the arguments of the skeptics:
"The skeptics call propositions false, doubtful, probable, and plausible. Their basic principle, however, does not in consistency permit them to use any of these terms. A false proposition is one opposite to the truth. How then can one say that a proposition is false, unless one knows the truth? A doubtful proposition is one that might possibly be true; a probable or plausible proposition resembles or approximates the truth. But it is impossible to apply these terms without knowing the truth by which they are determined."
Now, do you see my point? This truly is a great introduction. It not only "makes the difficult attempt of bringing the student up to philosophy's level," it succeeds. Because of this, it deserves much more than the five stars I'm giving it here.

A fine historical survey of philosophy.

In this volume, Gordon Haddon Clark (not "Maddon"; that's a typo on Amazon's part) provides a thorough survey of the history of philosophy. His overarching concern is to argue that secular philosophy cannot provide knowledge of truth and that -- as he suggests on his closing page -- it might be necessary to consider seriously the possibility of divine revelation as the sole alternative to total skepticism. This volume, while suitable as an introduction to philosophical thought, thereby also segues nicely into Clark's own philosophical theology of "Scriptural presuppositionalism."
Now, that philosophy is not without its flaws. In the first place, Clark does not, to my knowledge, ever consider the possibility that "Scripture" might consist of anything other than the Christian Bible; why the Jewish scriptures are inadequate by themselves is not addressed. (If it is argued that the "Old Testament" contains clear pointers to the "New," I shall argue in reply that it contains much clearer pointers to the Oral Law and the Talmud. For example, the written text clearly assumes that its readers have knowledge of various practices -- e.g. the wearing of tefillin, the ritually-correct method of slaughtering animals -- that are not discussed in the text itself. For another, an oral tradition of some kind would have been necessary just to guide the pronunciation of Hebrew words that would have been ambiguous without vowel points. Nothing so clear as this is offered by the standard Christian readings of "Old Testament" prophecies, which uniformly depend on wrenching passages out of context.)
In the second place, Clark's eminently defensible view that God is rational and logical would, on the face of it, seem also to provide a foundation for criticizing the text of Scripture itself. (If the Bible teaches that God is logical, and the Bible is then found to contain contradictions, do we not have a _reductio ad absurdum_ argument against Scriptural inerrancy?) In fact Clark takes it to be a foundation for criticism of _misunderstandings_ of God's axiomatically-inerrant Word, and at a broad, general level this approach is surely defensible. But why this tack cannot be likewise taken by defenders of the Torah (or the Koran) is never made sufficiently clear.
However, these issues actually tell in favor of the usefulness of the present volume. Though Clark himself would surely not have condoned its use in the defense of faiths other than Calvinist Christianity, many of his critiques of opposing philosophies and even some of his defenses of "presuppositionalism" could be profitably adopted by, e.g., Jewish theologians. His reading of philosophical history should therefore be of interest more generally than just to Calvinists.
And at any rate, it is all too seldom that a really great philosophical-theological mind tackles the entire history of philosophy in the first place. Clark certainly deserves respectful attention in this regard by rationalistically-inclined religious believers everywhere, whether their primary philosophical-theological loyalties are to Moses Maimonides or to John Calvin.

A nearly perfect story

I was not very hopeful when Debra Hyde's The Story of L arrived for review. It was suggestive of, and blatantly compared itself to the so called classic, The Story of O. The problem is that I think that `classic' is a poorly written piece of trash, and the thought of plodding through an even more poorly written copy was daunting. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Hyde's story is infinitely better, in every way.

The book chronicles Liv's journey from free lance switch to dedicated submissive to Cassandra. Liv enjoys topping and bottoming and lives for the sensations on either side of the whip. She battles something she calls the void; a ravenous need for pain, orgasm, and hard use that threatens to swallow her whole no matter what the tops she enlists do to her. Cassandra is a grand doyen of the lesbian BDSM set. She comes upon Liv and her tops at the club and is told that Liv seeks oblivion. In the process of giving that sweet oblivion, the void collapses in on itself, never to rear its head again.

From there, the two seem to realize that they need to be together; not as top and bottom, but as dominant and submissive, Mistress and slave. Cassandra puts Liv through a series of tests to see if Liv has what it takes to be Cassandra's slave. Yet, we can't help but think, as we read, that Cassandra is being tested as much as Liv is in some way we can't put our finger on.

The story is as close to perfect as I can imagine. It's clear from the outset that we're not dealing with a fantasy version of D/s slavery; but one that feels, and could very well be, real. There's desire, struggle, triumph, despair, need, and...love. There's a line towards the end that epitomizes the difference between Debra's masterpiece and the classic piece of trash. "Because without personage, submission is nothing more than obliteration." Ms. Hyde never once tries to convince us that true submission must eliminate the desires and wants of the submissive. Liv never stops being a full fledged person; in fact, Cassandra is never shown as wanting a mindless slave. This is what D/s is truly about.

The technical aspects of the story are spot on. No glaring errors lurk to distract you from the flow of the story. Debra has a master's hand with the English language that lets the reader experience the story rather than just read it. The erotic scenes are vivid and hot. Ms. Hyde has an intuitive grasp for what needs to be elaborated on and what needs to be left to the reader's imagination. Even if lesbian D/s isn't your first choice of genre, I think you'll enjoy this wonderful story.

An gorgeous story with real emotional (and erotic) depth

Story of L is, as you might expect, a lesbian retelling of The Story of O. It's the erotic tale of Liv, a woman who is surprised to discover ultimate satisfaction through an act of submission, and Cassandra, the woman who obtains her own satisfaction through the submission of others . . . but who does not easily offer up the pleasure of her dominance.

Before you get the wrong idea, however, this is not a sex-for-the-sake-of-sex slice of erotica. This is a story with some real depth to it, one that forces us to explore our own ideas of dominance and submission, even as Liv learns about hers. It's a story of dark romance and wish-fulfillment, but definitely with a be-careful-what-you-wish-for theme.

This is a story about the intersection between fantasy and reality, and the ways in which one can accommodate the other. It's both a story of the honest demands of a true BDSM lifestyle, and the honest commitments of a lesbian relationship. You get the sense that Debra has truly done her homework, and that she has a true passion for the characters and the lifestyle. Physically and emotionally satisfying, this is definitely a story worth exploring.

A native of western Flanders, Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq served in several posts as diplomatic representative for the Habsburg ruler Ferdinand I (King of Bohemia and Hungary, 1526--64, and Holy Roman Emperor, 1556--64). Busbecq's most famous mission was undoubtedly to the Ottoman Empire at the zenith of its power and glory during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In four letters to his friend Nicholas Michault -- who had been Busbecq's fellow student in Italy and afterwards was imperial ambassador to the Portuguese court -- he details impressions on everything he saw and experienced in Turkey, including landscapes, plants, animals, Islam, ethnic groups, architecture, slavery, military matters, court practices, clothing, gender and domestic relations, and the Sultan himself.

Suleiman (spelled Soleiman in the translation) the Magnificent is perhaps the most distinguished figure in Turkish history, and his reign saw the greatest extension of Turkish power. His devotion to his own religion and his tolerance of other faiths, his munificence and generosity, won him the fidelity of his subjects and the respect of his enemies. Busbecq was given the assignment of using diplomacy to check the raids of the Turks into Hungary, and he proved very effective with his quick sympathy, appreciation of the Turkish character, and untiring patience. He returned from Constantinople in the autumn of 1562 with an established reputation as a diplomatist.

Busbecq's Turkish Letters is a treasure of early travel literature, reflecting Busbecq's rich literary talent, classical education, love for collecting antiquities, and remarkable power of observation. Delightfully entertaining reading, it also offers invaluable lessons on understanding and bridging cultural divides.

About the Author

Edward Seymour Forster (1879--1950) was a lecturer in classics at the University of Sheffield from 1905 to 1945. He translated a number of Aristotle's works as well as other ancient texts for publication in the Loeb Classical Library series. He also wrote several books, including A Short History of Modern Greece. His translation of The Turkish Letters first appeared in 1927.

Karl A. Roider is a professor of history at Louisiana State University and the author of four books, including Austria's Eastern Question, 1700--1790.

A dream-like Journey

Incredible book. I would call this one of the greatest travel journals of all time.

Ottoman Empire was a source of non-ending curiosity for the European Empires in 16th century, and Busbecq masterfully manages to put his experiences into words.

What makes this book more special than any other travel journals of the time is that it is written by someone from an entirely different culture (also worth mentioning, Austria and Ottoman Empire were at war back then). Busbecqs views and attitude towards the Ottoman Empire also changes in time, while earlier letters are full of surprises for Busbecq, as he travels and spends time in the Empire, he grows fond of it and even shows examples of admiration.

Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in history.

Unfortunately, as usual Amazon and the publisher don't tell you what you're getting, which is close to fraud. This is the abridged edition. Get the Slatkine reprint from about 1870 for the full text.

It is wonderful to have some current documentation of the importance of the arts in people's lives. During this
time of high pressure testing, it is comforting to be aware that there is a view to what has really made our country progressive. The creative minds of Edison, Ford, Kamen, Gates, Jobs, etc. could never be summed up with rote test scores. Here's a good test question, "What other country has been the home of as many creative
minds as the U.S.?"

As an arts administrator and artist, I found this thought-provoking book to be inspiring and insightful. It is a must-read for anyone trying to make the case for securing arts funding in public education or non-profit arts facilities. It intelligently answers the question, 'why fund the arts?'. Hoffmann-Davis writes in plain text, making a strong case for the importance of arts education in day-to-day learning. She goes beyond trying to quantify what the arts can do in the classroom to articulating the case for creative thinking's effect on our quality of life and it's ability to better society. Excellent, excellent book! Will be recommending this to all of my artist friends and the art instructors I work with!

"Pink think" is "a set of ideas and attitudes about what constitutes proper female behavior," she says, and it "assumes there is a standard of behavior to which all women... must aspire." In casual, friendly language, Peril who shares tales of her own childhood pink think rebellion charts the amusing yet sad history of how women have been conditioned with a set of rules that often begins with someone telling them little girls are made of "sugar and spice and everything nice." A pop culture history of achieving the feminine ideal, the book explores everything from childhood and adolescence to marriage and the workplace. Spurred on by the "Patron Saint of Pink Think," Jayne Mansfield, pink think infiltrated frighteningly numerous aspects of women's lives from the 1940s through the '70s and was often driven by advertisements pitching girls' versions of house-cleaning supplies and feminine hygiene products that counseled women to douche regularly in order to ensure a happy marriage. In an afterword, Peril expresses her dismay at the apparent preservation of pink think today (witness the success of 1995's The Rules and 2001's The Surrendered Wife). Are phone message pads PINK?

I LOVE this book. I have been waiting 2 years and it is not LONG enough. I almost had apoplexy last night from laughing so hard while reading it! This book is very good in the genre of Nature Abhors a Vacuum: A Handbook for the Domestically Impaired, Kiss My Tiara and Southern Ladies and Gentlemen. Thanks for getting it into print (FINALLY) W.W. NORTON. When is the next book?
P.S. I am SOOOOOOO happy it was delivered on September 30th! You will have to read the book to realize the significance!

This book is genius! It walks a fine line between rationally exploring the history of social expectations for girls and reporting the horror contained within, without ever giving into the temptation to go on one long, humorless feminist rant. In fact, it approaches the topic with remarkable good humor. Well written, informative AND funny!

Essential for the thinking woman

A fascinating read. The author has a bit of a hobby in collecting examples of 'Pink Think,' or, paraphernalia which encourages women to do groom themselves to be appropriately girly to fulfill their potential (i.e., how girls were brainwashed for decades that their only goals in life should be to snag a husband and to find their true happiness in motherhood).
It's enraging and yet at the same time strangely intriguing to read about books, magazines, advertisements, games, television shows, movies and more were so often geared toward steering a woman to be a certain way.
Strange details include how women were encouraged to be 'fresh' from douching with disinfectants to childhood games where the goal was to get the perfect date to how a woman only achieves true sexual satisfaction after she had fulfilled her destiny of marrying and having children. On top of that it details how girls were encouraged to always dumb themselves down in front of men to flatter their egos, and the author even provides quizzes published decades ago in magazines to test girlishness or career woman potential.
Any modern independent woman will be both shocked, amused, angered and more than likely grateful that so much progress has been made (even though we're still encouraged in many ways to continue to 'think pink'). Just open up a woman's magazine and see the advertisements for pink feminine hygiene products and diet aids, among a million other self-improvement articles. It's great to see a book like 'Pink Think,' however, to realize how far we've come along.

I tried to convince myself of the usefulness of this book. It may be that my son is just too young for me to take any of these practices and put them into action. He's only one. I was able to take things for myself from the book, but mostly just the repetitions that are written in Chopra's 7 Spiritual Laws for Success.

The Baltimore Catechism remained in use in nearly all Catholic schools until many moved away from catechism-based education, though it is still used up to this day in some. In the nineteenth century, repeated efforts had been made in the United States towards an arrangement by which a uniform textbook of Christian Doctrine might be used by all Catholics. As early as 1829, the bishops assembled in the First Provincial Council of Baltimore, Maryland decreed: "A catechism shall be written which is better adapted to the circumstances of this Province; it shall give the Christian Doctrine as explained in Cardinal Bellarmine's Catechism (1597), and when approved by the Holy See, it shall be published for the common use of Catholics" (Decr. xxxiii). The clause recommending Bellarmine's Catechism as a model was added at the special request of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. It may be mentioned here that Bellarmine's "Small Catechism," Italian text with English translation, was published at Boston, in 1853. The wish of the bishops was not carried out, and the First and Second Plenary Councils of Baltimore (1852 and 1866) repeated the decree of 1829. In the Third Plenary Council (1884) many bishops were in favor of a "revised" edition of a 1775 catechism by Irish Archbishop Butler, but finally the matter was given into the hands of a committee of six bishops. At last, in 1885, was issued "A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore." Although the council had desired a catechism "perfect in every respect" (Acta et Decr., p. 219), theologians and teachers criticized several points (Nilles, "Commentaria", II, 265, 188). Soon various editions came forth with additions of word-meanings, explanatory notes, some even with different Arrangements, so that soon there was a considerable diversity in the books that go by the name of Baltimore Catechism.
