This text is an introduction to the theory and practice involved in the design and management of technically oriented projects. It is a merger of our personal experiences as designers, engineers, and technical managers of projects whose values have ranged from several thousand to a few million dollars. We have assumed that you are

A student studying science, engineering, or technology
Interested in the planning, performing, and monitoring of projects
Expecting to become involved in projects that will grow in size and complexity

Other texts discuss project design and technical management. However, many of these texts are theory oriented and lack practical examples. (Texts that we feel would be useful to you as references are noted in the bibliography.) We have tried to achieve a balance between theory and practice by including a major case study that is introduced in chapter 1 and continues through chapter 5.

Our years of experience have taught us that the best theoretical knowledge is of little value until you apply it to practical problems. These problems include

Estimating costs and schedules accurately at the beginning of a project
Determining and fulfilling the expectations of the client
Imparting theoretical and practical knowledge to new employees
Guiding diverse groups of people toward a common goal
Earning a profit so other projects can be pursued
Enjoying the work as it progresses

What is the value of life experiences if they do not include (1) learning, (2) having fun while learning, and (3) earning the trust and respect of your superiors, fellow employees, subcontractors, and clients? Not much, we say!

The Northeastern University Cooperative Education Department's motto is "Learn while you earn:" We add, "Enjoy your work, enjoy your employ," and prepare for your next opportunity. Test your new skills outside the classroom and practice the theoretical principles you have learned.

The philosophical basis of this book is the systematic approach to project design and management. This approach requires continually considering and reevaluating how each portion of a project interacts with the entire project. Its use can lead to an efficient, useful, and cost-effective product, process, or service.

A typical project using the systematic approach consists of four phases:

The Conception Phase, in which ideas are devised and brainstormed 2.

The Study Phase, in which potential designs are investigated

The Design Phase, in which the system is actually designed in detail

The Implementation Phase, in which the system is constructed and delivered

The four phases of the systematic approach:

develop ideas
investigate design options
design product
construct product

These phases may overlap. However, for discussion purposes, we consider them to be separate in time and cover them in separate chapters.

Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 each deal with one of these phases. The four chapters have the same organizational structure, with the following sections:

Purpose and goal of the phase

Activities occurring during the phase

Documentation for the phase

Defining the completion of the phase

Exercises

The example we use for the major case study is the result of our experiences in working with local business, industry, government agencies, and charitable foundations. In this example, Northeastern University engineering and technology students become involved in a community project in the town of Bedford, Massachusetts. The names of students used in the case study are fictitious.

Chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9 are specialty chapters. They describe our approach to systematic; management, documentation, documentation interaction, and modeling. These chapters are am introduction to topics that may be of value to you in later years.

Colleges and universities using this book may need to adapt the sequence in which information is presented so that it dovetails with a variety of courses. The topics covered in the appendixes allow for the flexibility in presentation. The topics are

Appendix A: Value Analysis and Engineering
Appendix B: Objectives, Task Descriptions, and Active Verbs.
Appendix C: Specification for the Town of Bedford: "An Activity Center".
Appendix D: Bedford Activity Center Contract.
Appendix E: Bedford Activity Center Contract Change Notice (CCN)
Appendix F: Records and Their Interactions
Appendix G: System-Level Specifications
Appendix H: Student Activity Center As-Built Plans

Note that appendixes C, D, E, and H relate specifically to the major case study, the activity center for the town of Bedford.

It is dense but contains a lot of the practical and technical techniques that are used to create, control, and implement projects especially in an industrial environment. I would recommend this book to those wanting to pursue project management as a direction for their career.

This manual is selective it what problems they prefer to provide explanations to solutions. If you can find it used for less than $80 then I'd suggest trying that. I'm not happy with the price but it is, nonetheless, somewhat helpful.

About the Author
JOHN KOESSLER serves as chair of the Pastoral Studies department in the undergraduate school of the Moody Bible Institute where he has served on the faculty since 1994. Prior to joining the Moody faculty, John served as pastor of Valley Chapel in Green Valley, IL for nine years. He is an award winning author who has written thirteen books and numerous magazine articles. He writes the monthly Thelogy Matters column for Today in the Word and is a frequent workshop leader at the Moody Pastor's Conference. John is married to Jane and they have two adult sons. They live in Munster, IN.

A Very Helpful Addition

This new work from Moody Press recently dropped through my door. I have not read it all, but I have read enough. I have read enough to recognize that this is a very helpful book for preachers.

It is written by faculty members and associates of Moody Bible Institute and Moody Graduate School. Each writer writes in their own area of expertise and this creates a collection of some quality. It is easy to think that only homiletics profs are seeking to produce preachers, thereby forgetting the specific skills and input of other members of a good Bible school faculty. This book redresses that balance.

The book's 27 chapters are divided into four sections. The first section is Forming a Philosophy of Preaching, which includes chapters from the present and two former presidents of Moody. Section two is entitled, Mining the Text. This section addresses the interpretation of narrative, didactic, poetic and prophetic literature, as well as two chapters on the use of Hebrew and Greek in preparation and in preaching (amen and amen to some of the advice given in The Use and Abuse of Greek in Preaching).

The third section is entitled Illustrating Truth with chapters on the use of comparison, history, story, drama and technology. Finally the fourth section is entitled Developing Methodology. This final catch-all section includes chapters on audience analysis, sermon movement, delivery and the use of Bible software (not sure why this is not in section 2).

Although I see no formal endorsement by Haddon Robinson, his name is blazoned across the back cover under a quote that has driven the editor of the book, John Koessler, to compile this book. The quote is typical Robinson, "Why is it that some can preach for an hour and it seems like five minutes, while others preach for only five minutes and it seems like an hour?" Good question. And this book is a worthy addition to the many books that seek to answer it.

I have not finished yet the book...but i read enough as to say that this is a very encouraging book to read for those who are interested on how to communicate God's Word. As I have been reading different chapters I was feeling compelled and with more clarity of mind on how to communicate and what to communicate. I recommend this book to everyone.

To paraphrase Ira Gershwin, "on every [page] that you turn you meet a notable with a statement that is eminently quotable" in this collection. According to editor Shapiro, this is "the first quotation book to be compiled using state-of-the-art research methods to seek out quotations and to trace quotation sources." He compares his approach with that of the Oxford English Dictionary: he, too, traces words back to their earliest possible usages. Using a variety of electronic sources, such as JSTOR, LexisNexis, ProQuest Historical Newspapers, andTimes Digital Archive, scores of quotations were verified, and in many cases reverified. The more than 12,000 quotations collected here span a wide array of subjects, from literature, philosophy, and history to science, business, and politics.

Quotations are presented alphabetically by the name of the author or speaker. Shakespeare and the Bible, the mother lodes of quotations, are amply represented, but emphasis is on "modern and American materials." Children's authors, who are often ignored in other dictionaries, are quoted here. There are a number of special sections devoted to particular types of quotations, among them advertising slogans, ballads, film lines, political slogans, and radio and television catchphrases. Song lyrics are entered by the name of the composer, and film lines appear either under the film title in the special section devoted to movie lines or, if they originated in a book or play upon which the film was based, under the author of that literary source. Proverbs span the centuries and often include evidence of a saying's first print appearance. A keyword index, an essential element of any quotation dictionary, rounds out the text.

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (17th ed., Little, Brown, 2002) has around 25,000 quotations, and Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (6th ed., 2004) has more than 20,000. Although the Yale dictionary is smaller, readers may find it a richer source for familiar names, from Dr. Seuss to Donald Rumsfeld, and for special categories such as advertising slogans and film lines. Quotation dictionaries are an essential part of the reference collection, and this one, with its broad scope and meticulous attention to the origins of the material quoted, will enhance any collection, large or small. Entertaining as well as Enlightening

During the past 25-30 years, I have purchased and then made frequent use of dozens of anthologies of quotations (including revised and updated editions of Bartlett and Oxford) and consider The Yale Book of Quotations the most entertaining and enlightening of them all. As editor Fred R. Shapiro duly acknowledges, he had the substantial benefit of state-of-the-art research methods and resources that were not available to his earlier counterparts and thus was able to trace more thoroughly the origins of quotations he selected. Correct attribution is especially important to those who are, as Joseph Epstein characterizes them in the Foreword, "highly quotatious." Here several such corrections. "We are like dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants"(Bernard of Chartres, not Isaac Newton), "War is hell!" (Napoleon, not William Tecumseh Sherman), and "Murphy's Law" (George Orwell, not Edward A. Murphy, Jr.) Shapiro also includes a number quotations not found in previous anthologies. For example, "Whatever does not kill me makes me stronger"(Friedrich Nietzsche) and "Live Fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse" (William Motley). The 12,000 quotations are arranged in alphabetical order by author, with source and date of origin cited.

I especially appreciate Shapiro's provision of 200 memorable "Film Lines" (Pages 258-269) that include some of my personal favorites. For example:

Adam Cook (Oscar Levant) in An American in Paris (1951):"[My face is not] a pretty face, I grant you, but underneath its flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character."

General Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott) in Dr. Strangelove (1964): "Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million people killed, tops, depending on the breaks."

Captain (Strother Martin) in Cool Hand Luke (1967): "What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton) in Island of Lost Souls (1933): "[The natives] are restless tonight."

Howard Beale (Peter Finch) in Network (1976): "I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell `I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!'"

Harry Lime (Orson Welles) in The Third Man (1949): "In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy, and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

This is an anthology to be kept near at hand, perhaps on a coffee table, and will encourage and generously reward occasional browsing. Here are a few that recently caught my eye:

A U.S. sailor saluting a new flag hoisted on his ship: "I name thee Old Glory." William Driver (1821)

"The most important aspect of our [Israel's] policy must be our ever-present, manifest desire to institute complete equality for the Arab citizens living in our midst.... The attitude we adopt toward the Arab minority will provide the real test of our moral standards as a people." Albert Einstein (1955)

"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, and Germany doesn't want to go to war." Chris Rock (quoted in Calgary Sun in 2003)

"Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing." Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891)

Using meticulous research to trace quotations to their original sources, Fred R. Shapiro was able to determine the validity of a claim such as Yogi Berra's, "I really didn't say everything I said." He probably didn't make all the statements attributed to him but he did make that claim, Shapiro confirms, during an interview by Sports Illustrated in 1986. Terrifically entertaining and useful

I have never owned a "quotations book," and I never had the desire to own one. But, getting ready to deliver a new speech, I now have the desire to pepper it with entertaining quotations, to illustrate my points.

To do so, one can go off of one's memory, but, as Joseph Epstein points out in his witty introduction, one will miss the mark: the quote and the attribution will most likely be wrong. So much for illustrating one's point!

Still, what I like most about this book is the sheer entertainment value. I keep it next to me on my desk, and, in a free moment, I would rather graze through it than surf the Internet.

The quotes are obviously weighted towards American authors and pop culture icons of the last 50 years. It includes famous lines in films, advertising and music culture. The chances that your quotation will hit the mark with your audience are greater with this book.

One note of caution: you shouldn't read this book looking for an author's most literate quote. The purpose of the book is to provide the most famous quote and nail down the attribution. Nevertheless, that shouldn't prevent you from deriving immense pleasure from just reading the book from page 1 to 851.

In my view this is one of the best modern commentaries ever to be published on the Golden Dawn system of magic. I found each of the separate commentaries on the Flying Rolls to be of interest and, notwithstanding
a few minor historical errors in places, mostly to considerably enhance both interest in and knowledge of the individual Rolls themselves. In terms of the Rolls themselves it is also a far more useful volume than the original
publication. The latter had the annoying drawback that it did not contain all the Rolls (i.e. those published by Regardie) and its organisation into distinct subjects was distinctly unhelpful. This new volume, however,
provides all the Rolls together in the order in which they were originally issued which I much prefer. I recommend this book highly and congratulate the various contributors. Tony Fuller.

A very important contribution

The outstanding book collects in one place all of the Flying Rolls, which were instructional papers or lectures from the original Golden Dawn. This alone is a worthwhile contribution, since the Francis X. King edition of the Flying Rolls only contains the papers not already printed in Regardie and even between the two not all are complete and accounted for. Add to this that this volume includes valuable and insightful commentary on every single roll by nearly every major figure in the modern Golden Dawn community! This book has become one of the most important books in my collection.

I have to say I loved this book, and have utmost respect for the knowledge that the commentators and the FR authors have. Several of the commentators I converse with on Golden Dawn forums on Facebook. It would be trite for me to state a concise review, as each and every time I read any of the Flying Rolls and their commentaries, new insights are gained. So therefore, while I recommend this book to any student of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, I would be posting daily to weekly reviews from each insight gained. One of my primary interests was on the Will, to try to analyze that with the effect of Vibration. However, this inevitably leads to another area, purification of the mind body and soul. Well then, where to begin? Read it for yourself, page one is where to begin.

These include the Humanaquarium, a participatory musical performance; the Personhood project, in which a researcher and a couple explored the experience of living with dementia; the Prayer Companion project, which developed a technology to inform the prayer life of cloistered nuns; and the development of social media to support participatory publics in settings that range from reality game show fans to on-line deliberative democracies.

John McCarthy and Peter Wright are among the most thoughtful and innovative thinkers in contemporary HCI, as this book resoundingly demonstrates. Drawing upon case studies that span from dialogical art projects to innovative technical designs, they force us to confront how HCI as a discipline has conceived of 'participation' and the entire project of design/use relations. The argument that they present will reverberate for a long time.

'Participation' suffers from being so attractive. The word too effortlessly connotes engagement, equity, and co-production.
