An interesting and decently illustrated book

I was pretty impressed by this book simply for the fact that it is a very general guide to shunga and does not assume any understanding of its history or of japanese culture or language, yet it is still quite informative and really skimps on neither information or illustrations. I was hoping for something a bit more in depth, but most people who aren't looking for a scholarly study of Shunga will appreciate this book.

Very Positive for all Martial Arts

I purchased this book even though I am studying TaeKwon Do and not Karate. While the stories of the individuals featured were interesting I really learned a lot buy the lessons each chapter taught. Richard Kim does a terrific job of teaching the reader lessons, such as why it is important not to become a specialist in one area or why a student of Martial Arts should not study for glory but for personal satisfaction, as well as telling a great story. The book is short and to-the-point but also entertaining. I strongly encourage others to read this and will suggest it to the other students where I study.

Richard Kim is expert in many arts & practices. Writing is one of many.... He brings from his experiences memorable stories of the martial arts. This work is one of a very few accessable today which easily could be read by either adults OR children.... with it's lessons & parables accessable according to the readers "ability". An outstanding book.... acquire it if possible!!!!

To Come Up with the Right Answers, We Need to Start with the Right Questions

I am a print dinosaur who is now part of a digital startup that seeks to envision the next step forward in the evolution of online news. I found this book very helpful, it really laid out all the questions and issues one can imagine, all in one place. It's easy to become scatter-brained when considering all the possibilities. "Geeks Bearing Gifts" helps put it all into convenient boxes. I kept wanting there to be one last chapter in which the author says, "OK, I've just spent several chapters identifying all the issues, now here are the ANSWERS." But that's up to us to figure out, isn't it? Nobody has the answers just yet. There will be lots of experiments in coming years; eventually our industry will find a path forward. It has to, we are needed. While many of us newspaper people think of current days as something to dread, author Jeff Jarvis shows that with a slight change of attitude, it's easy to see we are entering an era of great adventure. Let's all put on our creative thinking caps and figure this out! We can do this.

The future of journalism may depend on relationships

In marketing and advertising, there’s growing interest in serving people as individuals rather than in mass. Forget big data. Let’s focus on small data so we can develop relationships with people and provide what they truly need, want and expect. Jeff Jarvis advocates such a relationship model for journalism that rebels against the mass communication tradition. His recommendation goes beyond building relationships between journalists and readers; it includes engagement among news providers. A collaborative model that links many stakeholder groups seems to me a sensible response to the digital disruption that knocked the breath out of print journalism. But Jarvis doesn’t provide solutions. Instead, he offers eliminations and possibilities. For example, he makes a great case for why most publications (especially hyperlocal ones) should ditch the pay wall. He also explores how news sources might use tools to help serve people’s particular needs and interests. Of note, he asks why behavioral ads are so common, yet no one has developed a similar system for content. My only beef with his essay is that the possibilities are not discussed with depth. It would’ve been great to read how a local newspaper might implement one of the many things he tosses out there, like the Guardian’s membership model. I am particularly intrigued by that one. Good read, folks. Lots of food for thought.

This is a great wake up call for news organizations. It doesn't lament on journalism's past, but it clearly states the reality of where journalism is in today, and offers dozens of ways journalists can take advantage of it in the future. It also offers some great insights into the tools the journalists of tomorrow are going to need.

All around a great read if you are a journalist, blogger, avid news consumer, or just a geek trying to find a cool gift for a journalist.

About the Author
Hilma Contreras Castillo (1913-2006) was a Dominican writer, born in San Francisco de Macor�s. She was educated in Paris, where she studied French and English, as well as literature and archaeology. She returned to the Dominican Republic in 1933. In 1937, at the encouragement of fellow writer Juan Bosch, she began writing stories, which were published in various newspapers. In 2002 she became the first woman to receive the National Literature Award in the Dominican Republic.

Molly Blaisdell has an insatiable curiosity that leads to lots of questions. Her favorite one is "Why"? Honestly, she feels the best children’s books are really for everyone. She loves to spin out stories and is the author of 29 children’s books, with nine Picture Window Books titles. Molly inspires writers with her weekly blog, Seize the Day. She likes to laugh out loud until she has to take something for the headache. She enjoys yoga, art, reading books and fruit smoothies. Molly grew up in Texas, is the mom of four wonderful children, and currently lives in the wilds of Woodinville, Washington, with her husband, Tim.

I always thought of books like a treasure chest, and the illustrations, like windows to look inside. My mother says, I was born with a pencil in hand...my left hand. I drew before I was able to speak. When I was eight years old, we moved into a new home, a big one. Our hobbies-room in this new home was so white that I had an idea. I decided to make it more colorful and I filled the walls with my characters. The ceiling was the only place that was not touched by my pencils. This was the beginning of my artist's freelance career. Since then, my funny characters have stayed with me everywhere, at grade school first, then at University in Rome where I studied Art and Literature. Now, the characters share the attic where I work, with me and my sweet black dog, Luna.

About the Author
David Schnasa Jacobsen is professor of the practice of homiletics and the director of the Homiletical Theology Project at Boston University, as well as a clergy member of the Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is the author of numerous books, including Preaching in the New Creation (1999), and co-author of Preaching Luke-Acts (2001). He is co-author of Kairos Preaching: Speaking Gospel to the Situation (Fortress Press, 2009).
