From Booklist
Perhaps Ray Bradbury is the latter-day O. Henry. He is most famous for his short stories--and short they are, rarely more than 15 pages. He attracts nonliterary readers in droves, and he has a raconteur's magnetic style. Those are O. Henry's virtues, making it quite possible to read him pleasurably today, even if you read only "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Ransom of Red Chief." Since Bradbury is 50 to 100 years closer to us, just about every one of his stories is a gas, and his selection of 100 of them is something like a lifetime supply of nitrous oxide. No matter how calculated its surprises or how sentimental its denouement, a Bradbury story typically evokes a smile and a tip o' the hat. He acknowledges in the introduction here that he is in love with writing, and it is obvious there and in every story that, what's more, he is in love with life, so that even his eeriest, most mordant stories leave one feeling wonder, not bleakness: case in point, "The Illustrated Man." Even more to that point are his Irish stories, most of them set in and around Heber Finn's pub. Characteristically Celtic compoundings of grue and glee, these are read-aloud, memorize-and-recite gems of pure gab (especially "A Wild Night in Galway"). Ray Olson

Review
"ALMOST NO ONE CAN IMAGINE A TIME OR A PLACE WITHOUT THE FICTION OF RAY BRADBURY. . . . HIS STORIES AND NOVELS ARE PART OF THE AMERICAN LANGUAGE."

"Ray Bradbury is an old-fashioned romantic who's capable of imagining a dystopic future. He can evoke nostalgia for a mythic, golden past or raise goosebumps with tales of horror."

"Thank the shades of Twain and Melville and the living presence of Pynchon ... that this Poet Laurcate of the Chimerical and Phantasmagoric is still with us, still writing, still freshening our ration of dream dust."

About the Author

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2011 at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.

Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

An Outstanding Collection, Indeed
By Cherry Red's
Re: Mr Deusner's review from September 12, 2003, "but where are "The Scythe," "The Crowd," and "Homecoming" from THE OCTOBER COUNTRY? What happened to "The Picasso Summer" and (a personal favorite) "Some Live Like Lazarus"?"

Those are in "The Stories of Ray Bradbury" (1980), a marvellous collection of 100 stories. This collection has another hundred - no overlap, which makes it an essential "volume 2" for those with "volume 1". Of course, the best thing is to simply buy all the books, especially considering that RB is the greatest writer ever!

American Government: Myths and Realities, by Alan R. Gitelson, Robert L. Dudley, Melvin J. Dubnick

What the typical introductory-level student knows about American government and politics is often based on common myths that distort the reality of the political world. Rather than dismissing those myths as outright falsehoods, American Government: Myths and Realities, 2014 Election Edition, encourages students to confront their preconceived notions in order to think critically about government and politics. Clearly and distinctively woven into each chapter, the myths-and-realities theme provides a pedagogical framework that engages students with interesting conundrums while effectively covering the core concepts of American government.

FEATURES

* Full coverage of the 2014 midterm elections and Supreme Court decisions

* Updated throughout to address such issues as public opinion and political participation, the media, and civil liberties and civil rights (now covered in two separate chapters)

Review

"American Government provides students with a critical assessment of commonly held beliefs about the structures and processes of American government by highlighting common myths and why these myths fail to capture the reality of policymaking in the United States."--Paul Nolette, Marquette University

"This text does an outstanding job of engaging students through salient and current political controversies. It uses perceptions of politics in order to entice readers into discovering the ways in which American politics really operates."--Ken Moffet, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

"The authors use colorful and recent examples that will help students place current events into context. The book also helps them relate current events to political patterns in history by using examples from the past in almost each chapter."--Jillian Hartley, Arkansas Northeastern College

A practical, basic textbook
By A Customer
This book offers a foundation for political concepts and historic background about the U.S. Using standard survey course format, the author skims the broad topics of government from the core documents, including the Declaration and the Constitution, to the general structures and processes of governing. While I must conclude with a prior reviewer that the writing is unexciting, I have yet to find THE basic government text equivalent of "Democracy - Not 4 Dummies"

American Government
By Raoul Gravel
A trully remarkable text book! This text strives where many fail, in communicating with students from AP level high school to Doctoral studies. Includded are full color diagrams on the political process, governmental structure dating back to the 1600s. Also, philisophical viewpoints from Plato to John Locke. The benefit of the text, is its current up-to-date information on the 'insides' of political views and parties. This text would assist anyone in learning about our nations history and government.

A different and compelling Henty book
By D. D. LeDu
This is not typical of Henty's books, but is the most interesting.

G. A. Henty was a prolific 19th Century writer, directing his work towards young men. His heroes are generally teenagers who combine humility with great courage, integrity and intelligence. They are, of course, just TOO perfect. Some criticize this, saying that the standards thus set are too high to be achieved. These critics (speaking of current times when all heroes, it seems, are to be degraded) forget that Henty intended to set high standards - not to be achieved necessarily but to be striven for. His books, I believe, help guide young men to become good men.

In this book, the hero has serious personality flaws and a dysfunctional family. He also lives in a dysfunctional community, divided between those who benefited by the replacement of human labor by machinery and those who suffered by the subsequent unemployment.

The plot is woven about the Luddites - the early 19th Century equivalent of modern "environmental wackos". The Luddites fought modernization of the workplace by murder and sabotage. As the hero, Ned Sankey, faces his personal problems (such as a tyrannical stepfather), he is torn between friends in both halves of the community.

This is, perhaps, the most interesting of the Henty books I have read. Henty normally portrays his characters in black and white, with little or no shades of gray. This is a deeper book, with good character development and a compelling plot.

I strongly recommend this book - especially to Henty readers who will be surprisingly pleased by Henty's approach in "Through the Fray".

The Kill: A Novel (Maeve Kerrigan Novels), by Jane Casey

Detective Maeve Kerrigan is away for a colleague's wedding, and she's enjoying an excuse to spend a beautiful fall weekend relaxing in the English countryside. It's a much-needed break from the grit and grime of her daily life on the London police force. But even at a wedding, the job is never far away.

Midway through the reception, Maeve and her abrasive but loyal partner on the police force, DI Josh Derwent, are called back to London. A fellow policeman has been murdered, in a compromising position in a public park at night. And when Maeve and Derwent arrive to speak with the victim's family, his wife and daughter are surprisingly cold and reticent, which adds further layers of complexity to an already delicate investigation. And Maeve knows the victim and his family aren't the only ones with things to hide: the dark secret that her boss, Superintendent Godley, has been keeping for years is threatening to blow up in his face, and if that happens, they'll all be caught in the aftermath.

Pulled between her loyalties to Godley, Derwent, the victim of a murder, and her own driving sense of right and wrong, Maeve will be forced to decide how much she's willing to risk in the name of justice in The Kill, Jane Casey's most intimate, compelling novel yet.

“A captivating police procedural heavy on characterization that will keep readers up late into the night…The voice of the novel is unique and captivating. “Casey's police procedurals go from strength to strength.” ―The Sunday Times (UK, One of the Top 10 Crime and Thrillers of 2013)

My favourite crime series.
By Liz Barnsley
Thank you to the author and publisher for the review copy.

Maeve Kerrigan is used to investigating murders. But this time a killer has struck far too close to home…
When a police officer is found shot dead in his car, DC Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent take on the investigation. But nothing about the case prepares them for what happens next: a second policeman dies . . . and then another . . .
The Metropolitan Police struggle to carry out their usual duties, but no one knows where or how this cop killer will strike again. While London disintegrates into lawlessness Maeve’s world starts to fall apart too. For if the police can’t keep themselves safe, how can they protect anyone else?

The fifth adventure for Maeve Kerrigan already – seems like only yesterday I started that journey and these days a new Jane Casey book is always one of the highlights of the year for me, so when this one dropped through my letterbox I promised myself that the weekend would belong to Maeve and Derwent. As it happened only a couple of hours overall was required which should tell you just how addictive these books are – plus of course there is my huge literary crush on Derwent, a character who, if he came to life, would be fighting us off as I know I am far from being the only one. Hey he would love it! And I’d win….

In this instalment, police officers are dying and there appears to be no rhyme nor reason to it – no-one is safe, not even Maeve’s nearest and dearest and the fact that I don’t believe Ms Casey would be adverse at any point to killing off one of our favourite characters kept me right on the edge of my seat. Add to that some of the ongoing threads of Maeve’s story starting to come to a head, and Im surprised I didnt suffer more than the odd papercut in my desperation to keep turning the pages.

Crime fiction being one of the most popular genre’s, it is hard to keep things fresh and new, keep the reader involved in the characters and the story but in this case it seems almost effortless. There is a beautiful ebb and flow to these novels overall, not just in this particular story but as an ongoing tale – with each new book you sink deeper into this world and each time there is something new to learn about the characters, their motivations and their relationship to each other, all influenced and impacted by what has gone before. On top of that each one has its own complete story within whichever current mystery is being unravelled – you can actually pick up any single one and not feel like you are missing anything. There is a subtlety to the writing that lets you know the things you need to know without the use of endless exposition and “previously on” type paragraphs that can take a constant reader out of the equation – in that respect these are perhaps some of the most cleverly constructed crime novels out there. I’m not constantly thinking “I KNOW this already I’ve read them all for heavens sake!” but equally I’m reminded gently of what has led us here. That is not easy to achieve – I know, I read a lot of crime fiction.

I often see these described as Police Procedurals, and I guess thats a fair description if you are looking solely at the basics. But personally I dislike that tag for the Kerrigan series, it gives the impression that this is “by numbers” writing. It is anything but – it is the art of creating a group of characters, putting them into varying and often dangerous situations and letting them live. It just so happens that in this case they are Police Officers, but thats not all that they are by any means, and there is nothing generic or standard to be found here. Jane Casey has a humerous and realistic touch that just makes everything brighter and more substantial. Magic on the page yet set in the real world.

I love Maeve. I love that she’s a bit useless sometimes but also intuitive, loyal and lovely. I ADORE Derwent with every fibre of my being despite the fact that as a woman I should probably often frown at his antics and show some disapproval. But hey, I’ve always been one for the bad boys. Surrounding them are many more authentic and often enigmatic characters, none of which you would want to be without – and here we are full circle to earlier in my review – edge of the seat stuff!

Anyway, I guess you can say I kind of liked this one. Now I’m going away to deal with my Derwent withdrawal. Sigh.

5 bright shiny stars plus an extra gold star just because. Go read them now. Go on…I promise you won’t be sorry.

Who is killing the cops?
By Denise Crawford
This is the 3rd book featuring DC Maeve Kerrigan that I have read though it is actually the 5th in the series. As always, I think one enjoys a series more if it is read, in order, from the beginning. The author does a good job giving enough backstory to keep a less faithful reader in the loop, however, and I didn't feel completely lost.

Maeve and her boyfriend, Rob, are enjoying an evening wedding in Somerset with the rest of her team when she is sent back to London with DI Josh Derwent -- there's been a murder -- a police officer has been shot dead inside a car in Richmond Park. But that's just the beginning. Even as the manhunt and investigation ramp up, more cops are killed. Are these killings connected? The case is complicated from the beginning and the narrative is solid police procedural.

The only jarring note is the constant emotional barrage from spending time inside Maeve's head with her relationship issues, her ambivalence toward Josh, her reactions to being a female in the police, and her self-esteem concerns. Perhaps I am in the minority, but I don't like Derwent and I definitely don't want Maeve to end up with him romantically. For all her rushing heedlessly alone into dangerous situations, she really comes off at times as immature and wishy washy.

Also, I'm American and I noticed the anti-gun sentiment. I can't for the life of me understand how police in the UK do not carry weapons on the streets or in their patrol vehicles. It seems like, since the criminals might have guns, that tasers, handcuffs, or batons aren't quite enough in confrontations and when going door to door -- there are some real crazies out there!

Despite all, I do enjoy this series and will look for the next book by this author. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-book ARC to review.

"We are vulnerable."
By E. Bukowsky
In Jane Casey's "The Kill," Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan is attending the wedding of a fellow police officer in Somerset when Superintendent Charles Godley dispatches her and her partner to investigate the murder of Terence Hammond. Detective Sergeant Hammond was an off-duty police officer who stopped his car in a wooded area of southwest London on his way home from work. Someone shot the forty-two year old Hammond, a married man and the father of two children, and subsequently drove away from the scene. There are few clues, although there is plenty of speculation: Was Hammond having an affair? Had he made enemies in the line of duty? Could this have been a random shooting?

Maeve Kerrigan is an insightful sleuth who notices things her colleagues often miss. Being paired with Detective Inspector Josh Derwent is no walk in the park, however. Derwent is a sexist pig and a pain in the neck. When the two of them interrogate witnesses, Kerrigan repeatedly has to smooth things over when Josh makes his usual tactless and offensive remarks. Maeve puts up with his shenanigans because she knows that he is a dedicated and hard-working individual who would do anything to protect her from harm.

What makes "The Kill" so absorbing is not its forensic or investigative details as much as the narrative's psychological underpinnings. Maeve and Josh are caught up in departmental politics, never a pleasant situation; something serious is troubling Godley, but he will not reveal what it is; and Maeve is guilt-ridden, since she is keeping a secret that, if revealed, would destroy the career of someone whom she greatly admires. While the detectives try in vain to solve the Hammond case, fresh episodes of horrific violence claim still more victims. Casey has written another puzzling and involving police procedural with nicely drawn characters, a gripping plot, and a fair amount of sardonic humor. The finale is action-packed and exciting, albeit a bit far-fetched. Readers who prefer tidy conclusions may be annoyed by the cliffhanger ending, but fans of Maeve Kerrigan will not want to miss the latest entry in this consistently absorbing series.

A must have for wine lovers
By javier alfaro lopez
This is a classic book from the great Robert Parker Jr. An incredible journey through some of the best wine estates in the world. A little too much focus is given to the US and France but this is to be expected from a US centric author. All in all a great book.
