An Amazon Best Book of April 2016: I was doubtful that I would like this book. While I appreciate a beautiful flower as much as the next city-girl, the thought of reading a whole book about a geobiologist-- a scientist who spends her life studying plants, trees, soils as well as flowers--made me want to run to the nearest dysfunctional family memoir about crazy parents and their wounded children. But Hope Jahren won me over very quickly. Somehow she knows me: “the average person [who] cannot imagine himself staring at dirt for longer than the twenty seconds needed to pick up whatever object he just dropped.” And she doesn’t judge. Instead, she just tells her story, which, it turns out has a lot to do with plants and science, of course--her father was a scientist, she basically grew up in a lab, and taking long walks through nature was the way she communed with her reticent Scandinavian American parents--but also has a lot to do with other things. Like life, for instance, and friendship and passion and love, for ideas, for work and for all living beings, including--shocker!--people. Surely many readers will feel as I did that the story of her relationship with Bill, her physically and emotionally damaged lab partner, is at the heart of this wonderful story; it’s unusual, it’s inspiring and it doesn’t fit neatly into the little window box we think we’re supposed to favor. About the Author
HOPE JAHREN�is an award-winning scientist who has been pursuing independent research in paleobiology since 1996, when she completed her PhD at University of California Berkeley and began teaching and researching first at the Georgia Institute of Technology and then at Johns Hopkins University. She is the recipient of three Fulbright Awards and is one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the Earth Sciences. She was a tenured professor at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu from 2008 to 2016, where she built the Isotope Geobiology Laboratories, with support from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. She currently holds the J. Tuzo Wilson professorship at the University of Oslo, Norway.

For scientists and women and people who love them and trees

Brilliant and funny. As a female scientist from a cold climate and a dysfunctional family, I can relate to much of this memoir. I think it's wonderful that this person has shared intimate parts of her work and life. I hope it inspires a new generation to become scientists and for all of us to see the wonder in the everyday world around us. This country does not value knowledge or science or scientists, but like itinerant poets they ply their trade nevertheless. This writer offers us a humorous glimpse into this world, and into the world of plants.

Reads like a great novel, but it's a real life.

I was sucked into this memoir probably because I'm about the same age, from roughly the same places in Dr. Jahren's life and I'm also a scientist. However, it also helped that she has a very engaging writing style with all the personal details that makes me wonder how the *heck* she remembered every tiny detail. This is not a simple "I was born, grew up and lived" story. It reads like a novel, with plot twists, heroes, villains and a relatively happy ending.

I appreciate the way she incorporated her struggles with mental illness, women in science and university funding (which will make any tuition paying parent give a HARD look at the college they are paying to educate their child at) within the book but never came off as whiny or complaining. Simply this is "the way it is". She is also deeply personal with her own thoughts on her childhood, the self doubts we all have in our twenties and eventually parenthood.

It was an entertaining, informative and inspiring read. Sometimes we don't know if we're making the right decisions, but if we made them, they are at least ours.

A moving personal story that help you see the natural world in a new way.

Hm - the official Amazon description is a bit weird, but the rest of the reviews are apt. If you bake the career of a scientist with a moving coming-of-age story, and add in a slapstick buddy comedy road trip, it turns into a moving story about the lives of people and plants. The story is told on the foundation of a unique and dedicated relationship that forms the heartwood.

How is that people who were not born into our family become family to us? While ostensibly a memoir of Jahren, the stand-out character is her companion in the lab and the field, Bill. Just as good scientific research leads to more questions than answers, the stories that Jahren selects for the book make you want to know the characters even more.

Jahren writes with a level of self-awareness and humility that is refreshingly honest. I realize that "refreshing honesty" is a clich�, but that's the first description of tone that comes to mind. The account bypasses self-deprecating humor in favor of humble introspection and insight. Some of the biggest connections that the reader make with Jahren are through the trees that she studies, as our struggles for existence aren't that different. She spends little time on triumphs, and tells the stories of the struggles, many of which which seem to be more fun and worthwhile in the long run.

Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals is kindred to Lab Girl. Durrell's story is a set of vignettes as a boy in the greek island of Corfu, as he learned more about nature, including ourselves. Jahren's story replaces the Greek island with a richer set of vignettes that take her from her childhood in Minnesota, through college, grad school, a series of faculty positions in search of an equilibrium. She makes plants sound a lot more interesting than Durrell's exploration of bugs.

5. Stay customer centric. The best brand decisions can only be made with the customer's needs and experiences in mind. See the world through the eyes of your customers.

6. Commit to a small decision group that has the power to make the pivotal decisions that impact the brand. Do not bring in new decision-makers in the middle of the process. All decision makers must be involved and be present at all key decision points.

7. Determine if your company is truly ready to make a commitment to revitalizing your brand and implementing new brand standards. Is your company ready to invest the time, the capital and brainpower to revitalize your brand?

8. Determine how you will measure the success of this initiative. Consider benefits like employee engagement and a more effective and efficient marketing toolbox. Communicate that the brand is the most valuable resource and it's everyone's job to protect and grow that asset.

Very Vague, Not Specific Enough

I've been in marketing and graphic design for about 25 years. I don't claim to know everything and I am always looking for ways to keep up with the times. I thought this book would refresh my outlook not only with my own business but my client's too.

It is a great resource for new (and old) buzz words like global sourcing, social networks, crowdsourcing, touchpoints, etc but that doesn't teach you anything but new vocabulary. Each item has a page to itself with a paragraph or two and a nice, brightly colored graphic. The problem I had was that everything was written in very vague terms with no real direction. I would have loved to have some specific steps or a 'case study' that walked through the process with some more detail.

For example, in opening to a random page I am at 'Collaboration'. A sample of text from this paragraph is, "The brand is the common purpose that unites a company across departments and diverse agenda. Centralized, user-friendly guidelines build brand engagement and make it easy for the whole team to build the brand one touchpoint at a time. Unleash the power of collaboration inside your organization to build your brand, and then with your customers and colleagues to innovate."

What exactly does all this mean? How should I apply it to my company? What kind of guidelines are we talking about? It is so general that as I read, I find myself in the middle of a Jay Leno fluffspeak segment. It just told me nothing.

I would much prefer something that gives some definable, measurable, goals and procedures. With the understanding that what one company does will not necessarily fit the needs of another company, the procedures can be a little open ended but that is where a case study helps to illustrate the process.

The Branding Cheat Sheet - An "Elements of Style" for Brand Builders

Brand Atlas comes in a slim volume but like a good roadmap it has everything you need for mapping out the journey of your brand. Throw away those heavy tomes on branding, this little book has all you need for a great brainstorming session for your brand. All the great brand building ideas have been distilled into simple but powerful frameworks in this book. It's brevity and simplicity will help generate some incisive thinking. The principles are universal and applicable to products or services in public or private sectors.

The book is divided into 4 parts - Brand Landscape (Dynamics), Brand Basics (Intelligence), Brand Management (Drive) and Details.

The first section gives an insight into marketplace trends and the changing brand environment due to technology shifts and the evolving consumer. Topics range from Global Sourcing to Transparency to Sustainability and Free-conomics. Each topic gets 2 pages, on the left the concept is defined and there are quotes from some well known thinkers and organizations. On the right, there is a visual image or framework that explains the concept.

The second section gives succinct definitions of the basic concepts of branding like Brand as identity, Positioning, Big Idea, Brand Extensions. In my opinion, this is really where the book shines. The concepts are explained with great brevity yet amazing clarity and the quotes act as true thought starters. There is a question or a thought starter below every definition followed by a framework on the right page. For example, Brand Perception definition starts with "Brands connect to the mind and the heart. Brand identity is tangible and appeals to the senses. Consumers want brands that understand them." The first 3 sentences alone are so powerful that one can spend time thinking about them in the context of their brand! The to-do under the definition is "Research why customers select your brand. Investigate the layers of competitive advantage that are subtle, emotional and perceptual..." Again these are carefully chosen words designed to make you think and act. The framework on the right of this definition shows 3 nested circles starting from Perception in the inner circle to Behavior and Outcomes is the outermost circle. Very powerful tool to brainstorm how your brand is perceived by consumers or even your associates. This is just one example.

The third section is about Brand Management. Brand building activities like Culture, Competencies, Perceptual mapping are discussed. The last section is Details which lays out action plans and processes like Branding Process, Big Idea Process.

This is indeed a unique book on branding that does not only lay out the roadmap of a branding journey but also provides thoughts and ideas that act as a branding GPS to take you to your final goal. The frameworks provided in book are really valuable, usually you would find these ideas scattered over several books. And then when you find them you would have to dive into text and examples to arrive at the same framework that is already laid out in this book to trigger your thinking.

Recommended as a must have book for anyone who has anything to do with building a brand.

A fresh approach to branding education

Brand Atlas prompts questions: what if it became a standard text in business schools to begin an awareness of branding concepts? what if it became a model for an e-book version? what if it were used to develop a common language with clients? Contrary to the cover copy, you can't read it in a half hour, but a complete reading will expand your knowledge of terms and principles drawn from a number of contemporary sources.

The book is an essential complement to Alina Wheeler's "Designing Brand Identity" which has become the standard text on branding especially in design schools. Where that book is comprehensive in explaining and illustrating the branding process, Brand Atlas is a compendium of single page descriptions, a glossary of fundamental ideas, each with an accompanying diagram by Joel Katz, all done in crisp Katz Wheeler style and colors. Finally, in the back there are short lists of process steps that will help implement branding programs, and which dovetail with the previous book.

Dr. Christoph Bartneck is a senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He worked for the LEGO Group in Billund in the 90s, which reignited his passion for LEGO. Since then, he worked in the USA, Netherlands, Japan and now in New Zealand as a researcher and designer. His research focuses on anthropomorphism in robots and figures and his research has been published in acknowledge scientific journals and books.

Fantastic reference for any Lego Minifigure collector

This update is a brilliant addition to the original tome. For any collector of Lego Minifigures you simply cannot be without this series of books. Great photos really help track down the figure you have (or may be looking for) and ensure you have all the right bits to make a complete minifig, perfect for ensuring your collection is accurate. The additions of back photo and head shot alongside the main photos really helps to.

It's a brilliant addition within these catalog updates to also show the new and used prices for minifigs. Helps ensure buyers and sellers are getting a fair price, i really wish this idea had been thought of in the original:-)

One slight drawback is that with the headshot being moved along side the actual figure within the catalog, the seperate quick reference collection of heads which was in the original catalog at the rear of the book has now been removed. I used to find this incredibly useful as searching for the parts of a minifig from a large collection of bits is easiest done starting with the head. Often heads are unique to a given minifigure, so if you haven't got that it's pretty pointless building up the parts using the other elements like the legs, arms and torso. Having that reference in one place made it really easy to look up the minifig within the catalog as all the minifigures it may have appeared on were clearly listed under each unique head.

This change doesn't affect the usability of the catalogs but it would be great to have that back in again in any future updates:-)

Excellent introduction to a major Buddhist school!

I teach Neo-Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism at Vassar College, and I use selections from this book in my course reader every year.
This book is an excellent introduction to Hua-yen Buddhistm (known as Kegon in Japan), a very important kind of Mahayana Buddhism, which has strongly influenced Ch'an (i.e., Zen) Buddhism. The basic teaching of Hua-yen is that "all is one and one is all." Cook explains what this means and how this form of Buddhism evolved.
It is a shame that this book is out of print. I hope some smart publisher reprints it in paperback soon.

The Best Explanation of the Concept of Emptiness

The Buddhist concept of Emptiness or "Shunyata" in Sanskrit is a pretty advanced concept in Buddhism, and can be really daunting for new Buddhists, or scholars. This book details the philosophy of a Chinese Buddhist school (long extinct) called the Hua-Yen or "Flower Garland" school after the sutra of the same name.

The Hua-Yen was a school that explored Buddhism through high philosophy and explored Emptiness like no other school of Buddhism ever has. This book really takes the reader deep, deep into the philosophy behind Emptiness and can be a challenging read. From my own experience though, having been a Buddhist for years, I finally understood Emptiness after reading this book about halfway. Having understood Emptiness, much else in Buddhism became much more clear. That right there gives this book 5 starts.

To reiterate, this book is not for new Buddhists but rather for philosophers or Buddhists who already have a strong familiarity with Mahayana Buddhism. If you are one of these folks, don't pass up the great work done here.

Best Intro to HuaYen Thought

This book, well-known to most English-speaking fans of Buddhism, served as a follow-up to Garma C.C. Chang's pioneering book on Hua-Yen (Huayan) entitled the "Buddhist Teaching of Totality". Both of these books (especially Chang's) served to introduce the sophisticated Hua-Yen School's system of thought to English-speaking audiences on a non-scholarly level, and should be applauded for this pioneering effort. Although both books were meant to target non-scholars as well as scholars, the complexity of Hua-Yen thought makes this a rather daunting task (and not just for lay folks!).

Francis "Dojun" Cook needs no introduction to fans of Buddhism, having written several fine books on Japanese Zen master Dogen's thought as well as this book and various articles on Hua-Yen. All are highly recommended reading. Cook combines the rare combination of scholar and practitioner, the latter a result of being a zen practitioner for many years. This gives a practical (or "practice-oriented") edge to his writing that is often missing in scholarly works. As another reviewer noted, there is an old Chinese saying that the summit in historical Buddhist study would ideally be "Hua-Yen for theory; Chan for practice", and Cook certainly appears to embody both sides.

Cook's book is evidently an outgrowth of his early interest in Hua-Yen as evidenced by his PhD thesis: "Fa-Tsang's Treatise on the Five Doctrines: An Annotated Translation". Indeed, Cook makes much use of this particular treatise (in Chinese: Huayan Wujiao Zhang) in his "Jewel Net" book, going into detail to elaborate on Fa-Tsang's/Fazang's metaphors such as a house -together with each part such as rafters, roof, etc.- displaying an interdependence and interpenetration of parts and whole (or "universal" and "particular"), and also the unobstructed interpenetration of each part with each other part (Chinese: shishi wuai fajie: a novel teaching of the Hua-Yen school). Heady stuff, especially how this totality vs. individual illuminates traditional Mahayana doctrines such as "emptiness" and "co-origination" in novel ways. Fazang, the so-called "3rd Patriarch" of Hua-Yen (although some suspect he was actually the primary synthesizer of Hua-Yen doctrines as a system), was a brilliant thinker and it shows in his efforts to utilize appropriate metaphors (not all his) of complex Hua-Yen teachings- the familiar "Indra's Net", the "Golden Lion", the house and rafters, etc.- I simply don't have space to wade into Hua-Yen teachings here, and there is plenty of literature now out on Hua-Yen that folks can refer to. As for Fazang, he evidently wasn't just a perceptive thinker, but also a reported miracle-worker (who isn't in ancient Chinese philosophy?) and who also had a shrewd political eye, judging from his popularity with Empress Wu Zhao, who naturally sought support for her rule from Buddhist doctrines. By anyone's standards, Fazang is a hugely important figure in classical Chinese philosophy.

As for Hua-Yen thought in general, readers of both books by Chang and Cook might want to go further and explore some modern scholarship in this area. Well-known scholar Steven Odin, for instance, has contrasted traditional Hua-Yen teachings on time vs. contemporary Process metaphysics, and the resultant dialogue has been interesting. On other topics, Cook himself disagrees with Garma Chang's description of "emptiness", the latter displaying too much of a subjective interpretation of the traditional "Mind-only" doctrine, according to Cook, who favors a more objective interpretation of "Mind". So there's plenty of room for scholarly debate there. Another reviewer also mentioned the innovations the Chinese brought to the older Indian doctrine of emptiness; Cook mentions the Chinese re-vamping of this doctrine in the book and elsewhere. The Chinese image enlarged the Indian description from a largely negative one, emphasizing the inconsequential nature of phenomena, to a more robust image, where phenomena are the "fullness" of totality because of being empty- hence, each side emphasized a different aspect of emptiness. These changes by different cultures on standard Buddhist doctrines are also the subject of scholarly discussion, which readers can wade into (at their own peril)...

At any rate, needless to say, the Hua-Yen books by Chang and Cook largely set the stage for Hua-Yen thought to become more familiar to Western audiences. For that, each deserves five stars for giving the public an entrance into this difficult material.

About the Author
Guadalupe Valdes is a Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and Professor of Education at Stanford University. She works in the areas of Socio-linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and has published numerous articles in one of her concentrations, the teaching of Spanish to both monolingual speakers of English and bilingual Hispanics. Professor Valdes is the author of four Spanish-language textbooks, two of which focus on teaching Spanish to bilingual Hispanics. She served as a member of the editorial boards of several journals, including Modern Language Journal, Bilingual Review, and Hispanic Journal of the Behavioral Sciences.

Thought-provoking and Peace-inducing

When I selected this book for reviewing, I was not familiar with the author (despite the book cover's statement that Forbes identified her as one of the 20 "best branded women"). The title and cover art made me think this was going to be a lighthearted book by someone who experimented with a variety of new-age spiritual activities. I thought it was going to be funny, possibly a satirical look at all the ways we try to find enlightenment in this life.

It is not. It is a fairly serious (despite some casual language and occasionally funny stories) exploration of her journey through A Course in Miracles. Through the 12 chapters, she takes the reader through the basic principles of the Course focusing particularly on fear and anxiety, the need to relinquish being "special" or labeling others as "special", and lots of work with what she calls the "F" word: forgiveness.

Despite my initial surprise at the serious tone of the book (not suggested by the title or cover art) I found myself pulled into her stories and observations. I am not a student of the Course, so much of her information was new to me, and I found it very engaging and interesting. I found myself resisting some of the concepts, but I suspect that is a normal reaction to new material which makes you rethink how you have previously perceived situations. Perhaps more important-- I also found myself relaxing as I read the book, and becoming more at peace with myself and with some people in my life. The book helped me to look at my own tendency to be a "victim" (which I would have denied prior to reading it) and helped me develop ways to get out of that role.

I recommend this book if you are interested in learning more about A Course in Miracles (the actual Course book is rather long-- this is a much quicker way to learn the main points) or are interested in learning more about the important role of forgiveness in your life.

Great spiritual memoir and guide by a Gen-Y woman but useful for all generations

This is a great spiritual memoir and guide by a Gen-Y version of Marianne Williamson, goddess of The Course of Miracles. If you are a baby boomer like me, you have to get past some of the gen-y jargon (and the slang from us boomers, such as cool, tripping and dig it...). The author also uses cutsie titles such as "The F Word" for the chapter on forgiveness, and cute words like "-ing" for "internal guide." But get past the language (or maybe you like it!) and it has great advice.

Her teachings are all paraphrases of and her own experience from what she calls "the Course"--and she integrates personal stories throughout the book, such as relationship breakups, forgiving others, getting off drugs, and more. She explains how the Course of Miracles book, and applying its principals, rescued her from a life of overeating, drugs, failed relationships, judging others, and low self-esteem.

My favorite, without doubt, is the chapter on the ego's illusion of someone being special, in particular teachers or romantic partners. In fact, the book drags at first, picking up at this chapter (chapter three, on p. 53). If only I had had her wisdom when I was so young! It would have saved me decades of grief, low self-esteem, etc.

This chapter is expanded upon in a later one, chapter 9, when Gabrielle finally finds the love of her life, the Divine Romance with Spirit. She realizes that she no longer needs a romantic partner in a man for feeling love, security and inspiration. "I had fallen in love with spirit...I now knew that love was not a one-time feeling I could access from a boyfriend. Love is in everything...Love was not something to be acquired; it was something I always had." She explains that she craved time alone to meditate, listen to music, write or draw, and found herself leaving parties early to do so!

Her passionate love affair with the Self is inspiring. It leads to meditations in which she sees sparks (and sometimes without meditating), a life filled with synchronicity and answered prayers, automatic handwriting, writing inspired books, confidence, love and joy.

But I also love the chapter on asking for help. The author claims that since asking for guidance every single morning, she has incredible synchronicity in her life. "By consciously asking my -ing for help, I experienced tons of synchronicity." I am inspired by this young woman's enthusiasm to ask for help more often--not just when I feel I need it; but everyday, and even several times a day.

The book is filled with great quotes, originals of the author, such as: "In fact, we only have one problem: that our mind chooses fear over love."... "The problem isn't the ego; the problem is your BELIEF in the ego."... "Outing the ego is empowering because we are reminded that it's a projection in our mind rather than our reality." Also, there are exercises and meditations throughout the book, as well as link for downloadable, audio meditations with her voice.

It's an inspiring adjunct to the Course of Miracles, written in such a way that young people can easily relate--and also useful for middle-aged people like myself who have been around the spiritual block but can always use some inspiration.

This book will be great for a specific target audience.

Quick Intro:
From my perspective as the reader, the author's main intention is to: 1). Share more about her life with her readers. I get the sense that after the release of her `how to' first book, people wanted more insight into who she is and what events lead up to where she is now. 2). Share the teachings from "A Course in Miracles (ACM)" (there will be more on this later) and 3). Help her readers to identify where they are blocked in their lives, how to meditate on these blocks, and how they can reconnect with both their inner spirit and tap into the guiding force of the Universe.

Where I connected with the book:
I've read many books on topics similar to "Spirit Junkie". Like Gabby, my mom is incredibly oriented towards a spiritual life. It was a common conversation while I grew up and because of it and my own personal interest, I've read tons of books about topics related to spirituality, self-growth, and meditation. I appreciate that Gabby has advanced from working on her own self-growth as an individual to wanting to share this message to as many people as possible. She writes quite a bit about her past and her false lack of authenticity. I appreciate that she identifies the Ego early on in the book and bravely shares with her readers when she was living from a place of fear and ego versus a space of love, compassion, and authenticity. She has some wonderful moments throughout her book when the reader is able to connect with her message, her life, and even refer to her website where she has guided meditations that weave into the meditations written in her book. Its an easy book to read, filled with a fun `easy breezy' carefree vibe written in a style that connects with a young `in-the-know' audience.

Where I didn't connect with the book:
Early on in the book, Gabby has two big messages, or sections that distanced me from her as an author. These same messages also made me question if there is anything I would grasp from the book that would make a lasting difference with me as the reader. "Spirit Junkie" is for the most part based upon the guidance of ACM. I've owned a copy of this text for about 10 years and occasionally open it up every now and then to read a lesson from it. Gabby quotes and follows her self-taught training of this text throughout her book, and I get that this is her intention. I would have liked her to give more of a background about how ACM came to be. Because so much of "Spirit Junkie" is based upon this text, it seems odd to me that she would not give her reader more of a background on what exactly ACM is. To me, this just made me question Gabby's credibility as a leader in this field.

It is also difficult for me to relate to Gabby's life. She writes about hitting rock bottom and pretty much being in `crisis mode' for much of her adolescence and young adult life. It almost seems like this book is meant for the type of reader who has reached similar levels of fear, desperation, and dysfunctionality (which is totally fine, its just not where I've been). Because the first half of the book is retelling her story, it was difficult for me to stay engaged with the material. I found myself going several days without opening the book and becoming somewhat bored as I was reading. I wish this wasn't the case because I get the amazing message that she's attempting to spread with her writing.

In a nutshell:
If you're a woman between the ages of 20-40 and still new to reading about spiritual and personal growth topics, you may really like this book and connect deeply with it. However, if you're well read on topics like spirituality and self-growth or feel like you're ready for something more advanced or substantive, this may not be the book for you.
